TY very much for this deep dive! I'm just learning Slow Hands and wanted a little back story and you covered it! Cheers…
PDA was the first Interpol I heard and the bass stood out to me right away. I hate that Carlos left.
Carlos D….amazing musician❤
Thanks for sharing this insight. Just saw Interpol for the first time playing in Berlin. Great band and I immediately loved the baselines. So great to see where it came from. Very inspiring Bass Player though.
Funniest taunt yelled from a passing car: sometime around 2010 I was walking in Brooklyn and someone yelled "hey Interpol, got any coke?" Best genre-based insult EVER.
Paul, I caught one of Carlos' picks in 2007. It was a purple dunlop big stubby AND boy was it heavily used – there are literal chunks missing (I'm looking at it now). That is a testament to what you said about his "hard" playing style.
COuld you make a video of Chris Slorach (METZ) or Cameron Picton (black midi)?
Algorithm
To be honest interpol bass lines are not simple they are very intercate and very complex. The beautiful of Carlos bass lines is that they are so melodyc he was just brilliant bloody brilliant
As an indie kid in the early 2000s, it goes without saying that Carlos D's basslines are now part of my genetic heritage
I'm working on finishing my first album right now, and the bassline of my track "Afterglow" is 110% hero worship / homage to the man himself
literally one of my goals on this track is that anyone familiar will hear it and instantly go "oh that's an Interpol bassline"
IOW I'm just here to sound more like Carlos
Please do one episode about Nick O'Malley!
He really didn’t like that kick drum
Has someone ever tried to play a Interpol song with a Music Man stingray? How is the sound? I think it can be interesting
INTERPOL without Carlos D is like eating a Hamburger without a Coca-Cola
When Derek Forbes left Simple Minds I felt the same – Interpol lost an irreplaceable member there. Ever loose their drummer they be history – For me Sam is the heart of that band.
I practice a lot of Carlos denglers bass lines on my Fender Jazz Bass
If you want to understand why CD might have found Interpol a little limiting in the end, listen to 'Public Pervert' from Antics, and then listen to the Carlos D Remix of the same song, which was included on the Antics bonus disk. The remix picks up one bass riff from the original, brings it front and centre, and reconstructs the entire song around it as though it were a disco classic. it doesn't hurt that it's one of the most naggingly hypnotic bass riffs imaginable.
I love Interpol. I hate how over-compressed their albums are though so I exclusively listen to their songs recorded live.
Hes also inspired by Mark Burgess of the Chameleons.
Carlos D was something special. They lost something when he left. it’s a shame he didn’t like playing bass because he was so talented.
listen to the coda of “not even jail.” amazing.
Ironically he's my favorite bassist. He didn't even like playing it and still imo was the best
Interpol's first 2 albums were their best. TOTBL and Antics. The lyrics and bass are what made me enjoy them. After Carlos left, I couldn't listen anymore.
The baselines on Interpol’s early albums are so cool. The New is amazing and Untitled is totally carried by the bass as the guitars create droning textures.
I wonder if it’s worth looking at the bass on Is This It? The early 00s was a great time for bass harmonies
My favourite bassist
You're wrong. Carlos didn't leave because he didn't like playing bass, he left because it was he was tired of being a rock star. He went to go into acting after his departure from the band.
Amazing review !! thanks so much.
What other bassists or bands sound like Interpol firsts albums ?
Great video, it was truly entertaining ????
Sorry for bugging you for months haha, thank you for this video Carlos D was my first inspiration to play bass
OMG YOU FINALLY DID IT
Sadly, Interpol hasn't been the same since Carlos's departure…he was such an integral part of the band's sound!
