In the introduction you mention him using fingers to play Guns of Brixton. I’m pretty sure he played rhythm guitar and Joe Strummer played bass on that track
And scales. A lot of scales. Especially on the first album.
Paul Grey is better
Very interesting, thoroughly enjoyed these insights
Paul was just a natural. Amazing bass player.
I love to play the bass lines of this amazing band. Damn Good
So happy to see people talk about him. Maybe it’s been a while but I think the musicians individually are so underrated.
"P-bass with Rotosound strings through a Nampeg Ez-Boo T." 1:55
He said his style came from LACK of technique…he was drafted in the band for his good looks & artistic talent rather than his chops
Paul said that he got into reggae as he could hear the bass on his records unlike the busier style of the likes of John Entwistle of The Who
the spotify podcast is gone!
Thanks!
0:52 what kind of bass is that
The Sex Pistols did not agree with the clash…
Galen and Paul have just brought out an album, and what I've heard is sublime.
Paul is a great player & yes it's him on the majority of the record's but he didn't write all of the bass lines & he didn't play all the bass lines on the record's. Just saying.
It was Mick who always told him what notes to play
I'd definitely like to see some hardcore punk band bassists two that comes to mind is chuck ducouski of black flag and klaus flooride of dead Kennedys that would make me day thanks man you rock
Thank you very much for Your How to sound like… videos!!! Great!!!
I'd be very surprised to find that Paul played on Lost in the Supermarket.
Hi Paul ! I can't play at all, but I like your channel very much 🙂
Norman Watt Roy of the Blockheads
You should also check Simonon's post Clash band Havana 3am. There are some cool basslines there.
Perfectly summarized. Thank you!
Very underrated bassist
Elevator going up!
Thanks for this! What is the name of the mentioned BBC podcast, please? Congrats!
I'm sure Paul had no theory behind him, but his playing was tight, interesting, and legendary.
Hey Paul, great channel, just subscribed 🙂 What about iconic bass player of The Stranglers, Jean-Jacques Brunel? And then, whenever you have time, Mike Karn of Japan?
the podcast seems to be taken down. that sucks
A lot of the bass lines were never played by Paul.
I was lucky to meet all the members of the clash in Nottingham , I’m 63 now and still play the clash every day.
This is by far the best analysis of Simonon's bass playing. You have to be a good musician to be able to analyze other people's music in such thorough manner. Thanks!
Fantastic! A bass legend from a legendary band. Goes to show you being a musician is more than just technical proficiency. I am loving this series.

Wasn’t expecting to learn so much from this but some great details that will get me approaching the bass slightly differently.

Smash your bass guitar against the stage just in time for a photographer to snap the most iconic shot in rock history.
