How To Play Wonderful Tonight By Eric Clapton – Guitar Lesson – Slowhand


In this video I demonstrate how to play the song Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton which was off his 1977 album Slowhand and written for Pattie Boyd. This is a beautiful song that features a haunting melodic lick and vocal melody written over a universally cool chord progression. I provide performance tips that cover tone tips, vibrato and phrasing. I show how to play the main lick in the song and provide impovisation tips and positions on the fretboard to help you craft your own solos.

  • Any idea how many guitar 'Tubers get the lick wrong by skipping that 7th fret G string note entirely?! Lots. Started thinking I was loosing my mind when I began learning this song a couple weeks ago; like maybe I was remembering something that wasn't actually there? Marty's chord voicings are better than most of theirs, too. But also, I expect these skills from a fellow EVH fan, lol.

  • Nice! I definitely need practice on vibrato. Funny that people think this is a love song when it isn't. Clapton said it was a night of complete exasperation when his wife kept changing her outfit and asking, "do I look okay in this?" (yes, you look wonderful tonight – now can we go?), making them late for some event or commitment. That he turned that frustration into something so soulful is the real beauty of the song.
