How to REALLY learn a song Fast – Intermediate Guitar lesson – For Auditions ASAP (BASS/KEYS ALSO!)

This is a method I’d suggest to any guitar, bass or keyboard player.

I used the song “Left Hand Man” by Chelsey Carter. You can stream it here:

Step 1: 1:29 active listening
Step 2: 2:40 make a chart that accounts for every measure
Step 3: 29:37 Play along to check the chart
Step 4: 36:59 Play it like you are on stage with intention

I’m playing a gretsch anniversary through a fender deluxe reverb

  • Thank you! This was a huge help. Learning to do this. Do you ever play single lines to the melody to find the chord?

  • Thank you! I've seen some videos of charting but none that are this detailed and show how you would chart the single notes. I've relied on tab laying on the floor that I can quickly glance at until I no longer need it. The Tribe sounds like a great idea although I am like a lot of people and question whether I am at a level that would keep up or provide valued input. Hacking my way along with a cover band.

  • I appreciate you sharing your workflow. I like the behind the scenes of a working musician as it gives me ideas on how I can be better and more efficient.
