  • I’ve managed to get close with a MXR Super Badass Distortion pedal into a Marshall Guvnor pedal then into a cranked AC30

  • I had a copy of that Guitar magazine on your wall bought it at the grocery store in about 1987. I threw it out about 1995????

  • Crying In The Rain is some of Sykes' best work. If any of you haven't heard it, you should check it out. Great rhythmic groove to it. Cool video!????

  • I never get the “it doesn’t stay in tune very well” critique of Gibsons. I’ve owned about 30 different Gibsons over the years (mostly LPs) from eras ranging from Norlins to present day ones… and I’ve never had one that didn’t stay in tune just fine. <shrug>

  • Funny. I didn’t know Bob Rock helped produce the ‘87 album, but I was just thinking moments before you said something that I wondered what Bob Rock would have done… eerie.

  • I mean this with full good intentions in constructive criticism. The sounds are fine. But you need to work on your pocket and your feel. Play with a metronome rhythm wise.

  • at 7:56 , your statement "common to Gibson..not to stay in tune“.

I feel sorry for your experience, but what makes your view "common"?

Otherwise thx for your take on Sykes, and certainly an opposite view on this tuning perspective on my behalf ! Spoken after 4 decades of of LP , 335, Gibsons and else…

  • John has a killer grab when his plays. You gotta play heavy to play Sykes. In general, you gotta play heavy when playing hard rock and metal.

John's rig was a 70's Les Paul, with the Dirty Fingers pickups, and you're right on, he used the Mesa Boogie MKIII Coliseum amp, although many people think it was a Marshall head, it wasn't, it's the Coliseum. But, the cabinets where Marshall, of course; but the main ingredients there are the Coliseum head and a good american Les Paul with high output pickups.

  • John currently plays EVH 5150 amps, the tone is in his hands because he still has that sound. A good Les Paul is a must. "A dawning of a brand new day" on youtube…..actually better tone now

  • I saw John play with Blue Murder and his tone was killer.. Cool video.. Yeah, great stuff.. John has the best vibrato too!

  • Killer content brother. ???????? it helps to know that I’ll never sound like Sykes with my setup & zero layering. Lol. John is a Savage on guitar. He & Zack need to write a album together, crushing it in the mid range & duel Vocal exchanges cutting each other up with nasty leads.

  • Thanks for the video.
Was wondering do you think Friedman BE-OD Deluxe pedal would fit the sound of Whitesnake 87?
    Thanks.

  • "Gibson Les Pauls don't stay in tune" ???????? Buy Custom Shop you bastard! I'm mainly a Strat player, but there is nothing wrong with my 57 and 60 reissues. They stay in tune a little better than stock Strats I own.

Gibsons (custom shop) only have ONE flaw..they're very fragile. Both of my reissues have dents and chips that would take years to appear on a Strat.

Cool video man, how did you tame the volume?

  • Hi, was wondering, where did you get the Mesa head cabinet? Was it stock? Looks & sounds Great!????????

  • So you talk about your rig .not john sykes rig??right??so where is the effect that he used??total bullshit waste of time.p off

  • Great video, but it would've been nice to see exactly what settings you had in a bit clearer of detail. As a person new to Mesa Boogies all the options is astonishing and a bit confusing when trying to recreate this sound.
