Back Where It All Began
The new Les Paul Standard returns to the classic design that made it famous, paying tribute to Gibson’s Golden Era of innovation and placing authenticity at the forefront. Pairing a naturally resonant solid mahogany body with a bright, clear maple top—a combination that has shaped music since the 1950s—this instrument reflects the era when Gibson cemented its reputation for unparalleled craftsmanship and tone.
The mahogany neck—featuring a rosewood fingerboard, trapezoid inlays, and a 50s Vintage profile—keeps the feel authentically vintage for comfortable chording and smooth bends, while 22 medium jumbo frets allow for both precise intonation and easy fretwork. On the hardware side, you’ll find an ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic™ bridge paired with an aluminum Stop Bar tailpiece—classic components that enhance stability and sustain. Vintage Deluxe tuners with Keystone buttons complete the old-school look.
Adding to the sonic formula is a pair of P-90 pickups, each loaded with Alnico 5 magnets. Revered for their raw, rich midrange and robust attack, these single-coil pickups can handle everything from laid-back blues to searing rock solos. They’re wired with audio taper potentiometers and Orange Drop® capacitors, ensuring that your volume and tone controls respond smoothly and predictably. Roll back the volume for cleaner tones or dime it for added punch and edgy breakup that cuts through any mix.
Whether you’re an enthusiast of Gibson’s Golden Era or simply looking for a tone monster that captures the essence of vintage rock, the Les Paul Standard 50s P-90 delivers the goods. From its historically inspired construction to its unmistakable Les Paul sound and playability, this instrument embodies the spirit of early electric guitar innovation, proving once again why Gibson’s classic designs remain at the heart of modern music.

  • I love your reviews and your playing really shows off how a specific guitar can sound and thats a beauty . I recently bought through a private seller a Chibson that looks just like that on except for the bridge which I changed but it plays great can,t tell the difference .

  • PS the Epiphone Bonamassa P90 Les Paul is all Mahogany, with a Maple cap, and uses Full Size CTS pots hand wired

  • If the price of this Gibson makes it out of reach, Epiphone has a Joe Bonomassa 55 Les Paul P90 in Copper iridescent. It has great pickups built with quality magnets, bobbins, and high-quality wire built to same specs as these Gibson pickups. It has great reviews. I bought it and love it. The only problem is they are hard to get because they sell out fast. Check out the reviews. Sells for $839 and comes with a high quality case which makes it an even better bargain.

  • This was awesome. Looking forward to Gibson Studio and Studio Session reviews Jon! The Session has Classic 57'(My fave Gibson pickup) and Studio has Burstbucker Pro's that you like… And the price is not the worst on them… Cheers!!!

  • A classic guitar Jon, I can see why you enjoyed it so much. As always your playing is wonderful ???? I keep looking at P90 equipped guitars, since I no longer have one in my arsenal, and having played a few Gibsons, Epiphones, and Eastmans's I have found that despite not really being a Gibson fanboy they do sound great, and there is something about that classic look which inspires me LOL ???? Hope you are doing well Jon, and that your family are all well and prospering. Thank you for always inspiring me when I listen to you play.

  • Great and timeless guitar, Jon. The G&L Fallout is also a phenomenal P90 guitar, just neck, but such a great, great tone. This LP sounds excellent though

  • The R6 is my dream guitar. Great playing but damn dude how do you play without using your pinky while soloing?

  • My gold top is by far my favorite guitar. I get nothing but compliments every time I bring it to a gig. I’m still obsessed with the Yamaha Revstar though. lol

I don’t care about the hum

  • Im new to how great P90s in a Les Paul sound. Loving my 56 Goltop P90 with V2 neck. Always wanted a les paul with P90s cause, i think i just slightly favor that single coil quality over humbuckers for most of my playing situations. This one had a slimmer neck, which is what ive been looking for. Hard to find non 50s neck on a Les Paul. The P90s are so versatile.

  • Hi Jon! I just wanted to say thank you so much for getting back to me with my question I had for you. So many other content creators/musicians on this platform do not. It really means a lot to me❤ You play beautifully????I admit… you certainly inspire me to want to be a better guitarist. Thank you from Springfield Missouri ????

  • It is a looker for sure. I personally can't have the hum from P-90s, so my 50's std. with humbuckers is the choice. That being said, P-90s are the king for rhythm guitar, you can pound them as hard as you want, and they always come out sounding great.

  • I really enjoy your videos!! The format, your playing, and your overall attitude and honesty. Very enjoyable to watch and listen to!

This thing sounds incredible. I don’t have a P90 guitar…this could be trouble.

  • I know how you feel right now. I just bought my first Gibson SG Special on Thursday. I can’t put it down. I feel this way about several of my guitars

  • Very nice sounding guitar, but very pricey. I got an Edwards Goldtop with P90 that also sounds wonderful. I decide to buy it from Japan after watching Jon demo for the Edwards a few years ago.

  • Great review and playing, as usual! My favorite finish is a gold top and favorite pickup a P90. I bought a Gibson LP Deluxe gold top last year and essentially converted it to a standard. Replaced the mini humbuckers (which I repurposed to my Vintage V100 gold top) with Mojotone Quiet Coil P90’s. It sounds great and plays like a dream. Neck carve is a rounded C and it feels pretty much like the 50’s vintage neck. I also put the correct knobs and truss rod cover from the standard on it and added the dial pointers. Only a very keen eye would be able to tell it’s not a standard model. It’s my favorite guitar of my collection. ????

  • JOn, I can only imagine how difficult it was to return that guitar, following your review. That souuuuund!! Exquisite guitar.

  • That is a sweet sounding guitar. What is it about a Gold Top Lester? I actually bought a Slash Gold Top, basically a Standard and it came with low wind pups. I love it. I have other axe's with more winds and umph. Thanks. A fan.

  • Went though my LP's recently, several R8s, R9s, other standards. The gold top standard 50's P90 I have is the overall best one. The P90s just sound so open, better for almost everything than a humbucker.
