????Description: Against my better judgement, a particularly beautiful “Dark Fire” caught my eye last year with an amazing flame top and it was complete in box and at a great price from the original owner. On Christmas, I finally got around to messing with the thing. It was frustrating to say the least. The low E string is a bit finicky, but the rest work ok. The master control knob works, but just doesn’t really have anything “worthwhile” in my opinion. Gibson Robot guitars have a large learning curve, but at least with the Firebird X, it is WORTH learning. The Dark Fire doesn’t really have any redeeming features in its electronics – all the settings sound about the same or just not that good to begin with. All that said… it IS a comfy guitar and would make a GREAT project to turn into a regular guitar. In fact, Gibson did their own version of that known as the London Fog. Hopefully I can document one of those in the future.

Overall, it was a cool idea and a good looker… but needlessly complicated for what it offers the average user.

  • I've always wanted a robot guitar. Hot take is these robot guitars was peak Gibson. Very innovative ideas mixed with classy designs. These were and still are very underrated guitars. Trogly stated in this video they picked this one up for $1,600 and after a quick google search, I'm seeing a lot going for $600-$700. All this before the real dark times when Gibson decided it's campaigning to sue competition and ruin their own reputation.

  • I made the same mistake and went through 3 models before getting my money back. The first one had a dodgy tuning head, it's replacement model then had a problem with the multiknob and the final model (which worked perfectly and I was pretty pleased with) was great for about 3-4 weeks and then during practice the nut that holds the strap near the neck broke off (luckily my reactions caught the guitar before it hit the floor). Never touched a Gibson since. Total trash and not worth the money.

  • These were built from the leftover bodies of the Les Paul BFG. They put a different top on and try to charge a ton of money. I used one of the original prototype models for a while. I like the tuning system but the guitar left a lot to be desired.

  • Play it with the robot tuners on. I'd love to see them going crazy trying to keep up. Maybe you'd sound like Alan Holdsworth.

  • Sam Ash still exist. They just sent me coupons, but they only exists as a online entity. Website looks kinda dodgy though.

  • instead of gibson using better tuners like grovers that actually stay in tune, they make self tuning guitars. ???? ????

  • Just with what they did with the firebird guitars instead of donating them sickens me. That and I've never played a gibson i liked except an old acoustic and a 57 melody maker a friend had because it was small. Every gibson sucks at staying in tune and they're fucking ugly. Well, the sg looks ok and I have to respect Iomi for what he did with it.

  • Reminds me of my Sonex Artist with the Moog electronics… The built in effects are even worse on that one though… 🙂

  • 1:44 never been into those kind of "car colours" on an LP, they suit a Strat because it's got that aerodynamic look like it's built for speed, but a Les Paul looks like a stationary object, it suits furniture finishes. The dark fire is a wrong colour but it's somewhat saved by the woodgrain.

  • I have a dark fire and legit the hate is mostly unwarrwnted. Its never broken on me and outside of the tuning system being something new you have to learn its a great guitar. Has alot of versatility, some of the digital claounds are meh but tech hasnt failed me yet

  • Oh wow… I thought this was finally going to be a REAL robot guitar, like those things in the AniMusic videos.

  • I purchased a new $1,995 2019 Gibson SG Heritage that had the "G FORCE" robo tuners. They never worked, never. so I always just tuned it using the tuners. They were harder to turn because the were linked to the robot tuner!
I gave that Gibson to a friend of mine who was always helping my wife and i to make repairs around our home. I gave him everything but I forgot about the strap and the little hand tool that could do anything you needed.
I did not like the Gibson SG heritage because it had the worst case of neck dive I have ever experienced.

  • Will it still work as a guitar after it's electronic brain is fried? All circuit boards die eventually, usually sooner than you might expect.

  • I have one, without the robot tuners and fancy electronics. I bought it from Gibson. I believe that someone had bought it and then returned it because the electronics didn’t work, so Gibson ripped out the fancy electronics and robot tuners and installed regular pots and Grover tuners and sold to me at a very inexpensive price. I love it. The pickups sound amazing. The P90 is phenomenal. Other than having a P90 in the neck position, it’s basically been converted to a Les Paul Standard. Plays great and sounds great.

  • I remember these coming out and i think the self tuning tech even made its way onto some epiphones. I thought it was kinda cool but reality quickly hit as people who owned them unanimously agreed that it was terrible and very redundant.

As a live guitarist I'd rather lose connection than break a lead.
