  • So you used the Dumble pedal to get your clean tone. What pedals did you use to get dirt?

  • I'm totally stumped, the FM3 can conjure up some killer Dumble tones, way better than the UA Enigmatic has… Not a criticism, just asking why?

  • Stellar playing mate!! Also another vote for more live playing! Everything I've heard from people demoing this pedal sounds good; do you feel there's a Helix tone that's about the same?

  • I think you nailed it with the 'good tones that are easy to access' comment. That's the appeal for a lot of folks. They need or want to go direct for some reason and just don't want to mess with an entire floor unit. Also: you nailed the I Believe in a Thing Called Love outro solo. ????

  • I’m going to be honest. John. You your playing is outstanding, but you don’t sound your best on this rig. You know it. Did you understand that yes you think it could its purpose on a vox?

  • well live, from audience perspective, I wouldn't be able to tell it from a RAT into a Deluxe, or whatever, something mid heavy and generic. it sounds pretty much exactly like I do, and I run a TS into a Mesa model in the Tonex

  • You need to use the app, or your reviews and information will be wrong. You don’t want that.

  • Hmmm- so no external midi control? Pretty much standard on most digital pedals these days… It sounds great but thats a deal breaker for me…

  • I'm sure I'm just a boomer at this point and I don't even gig anymore anyway but I just don't believe there will ever be some gimmicky "amp in a box" that will ever replace my beloved AC30 or any other live amp. There is a reason they've stood the test of time.

  • Keep doing these live performances coz Im really curious what stuff works well live. What are your favorite HX stomp preset that sound good live too? Just for reference.

  • I just believe at $600 in Australia – i'll just keep my Helix LT or my Hotone Stomp 2. very over priced for one simple amp pedal.

  • Regarding not liking it in the ears: what about headphones – Paul Gilbert's been wearing isolation headphones apparently. Start an arms race – who's got the biggest headphones.

  • I‘d capture my favourite settings with the tonex and play the profiles with the tonex pedal in the hx stomp’s fx loop. That‘s imho the best sounding combination when it comes to most detailed amp tones in a digital format plus bread&butterFX (plus a little extra stuff) and it doesn‘t really bust the bank.

Besides that, great playing as always. ????

  • Seriously, get a Tonex Pedal (can be found from around 350 Euros) and e.g. the Amalgam Audio Two Rock TS-1 DI tone models (18 Euros). They do sound better (without any doubt), and you can save and recall (Dumble like) 150 presets on the device if you need that many, and the display will even tell you what you are actually playing. No need to fumble around with Bluetooth which interferes with at least 2 devices per person in the audience and is an open invitation to hackers.
UA is receiving valid criticism about these devices since the first ones came out – I have not seen a single review that did not call out the lack of proper presets and midi in the last two years. Obviously UA is not interested in the customer – time to act accordingly. Somehow companies like Keeley, Flower Pedals, Alexander Pedals (just to name a few) can build pedals half the size that do presets and in most cases even midi properly for the same or less money while having absolutely comparable processing power. Just look at the revised Walrus ACS-1… 6 amps and cabs, custom IR support, an OLED display, full size midi in and out/thru, 128 presets on the device… in standard sized pedal.

  • I think there are times when it comes down to “how does it sound to you as the player?” It sounds pretty decent. I’m with you regarding in ears. Give me an amp or a floor monitor.

  • Really good point about the presets. I would think in a live situation it would make sense to switch between quite a few sounds and levels of drive.

  • sounds great. I don't really know what the dumble sound is, all i know is people with lots of money can afford one and the man that made them was a master amp builder highly respected, but now passed away. I like this format idea, as programming sounds is not my thing. I'd set up an overdrive for power chords and boost for solo's as a preset, clean to edge of break up not a preset.

  • Electro-Voice PXM-12MP wedge is pretty handy if they ever let you use your own choice/stuff over there.

  • So I was initially put off by the interface limitations of the UA stuff, but have consistently gigged the wet effects for last number of months with the understanding that their use case is WYSIWYG. I’m quite pleased at the moment with a dual ToneX setup, but if I wasn’t, I’d be hopping on this and the Lion to run Wet (Enigmatic)/Dry (Lion). I tend to be set/forget with amp sounds beyond volume adjustments and small EQ tweaks to suit a venue.

  • Couldn't you set the left switch to turn on the OD ( in the app)? That way you could use the preset and turn on the OD as needed … I think ????, not sure.

  • So many of us using IEM setups… you’ve never done a video on them?

Can I suggest you get a load and try them out? Systems… ears …

  • Couple years time UA will release a midi compatible version and we can buy them all over again ????

    Reply
  • Regarding platforms: I could perfectly live with switching between a Vox Ac/Ruby and the Enigmatic, I guess..

    Reply
  • Sounds very dumbly indeed. All things considered, pretty convincing.
And yes, more live footage please!

    Reply
  • It seems like having the “preset” switch be a toggle between the channels with a long hold to go back to WYSIWYG mode should be very easy for UA to program. That would solve the two channel amp problem without having to do a format revision

    Reply
  • Great vid! But why do you use that footswitch mode? For what you need i suggest ”overdrive-live/preset” or ”overdrive-preamp boost”
That way you get the clean tone (or 2 different ones) and then the overdrive for both of them really handy
    Tell us how it goes!

    Reply
  • Great playing! Maybe do some captures of it in the QC? That solves the multi channel problem.

    Reply
  • Yeah, the artificial limits UA put in these pedals really out me off them. I don't believe anything is keeping these pedals from storing more presets, UA have just decided to not allow it.

  • In ears can be amazing with the right sound guy. It is nearly impossible to do both FOH and IEM at the same time. The attention is split, and the quality of the IEM mix will always take a back seat. Now if you have a dedicated sound guy for monitors, if they are worth their salt, IEM's will be the best thing you could dream of.

  • I loved your tone on that gig footage.

Your criticism is valid though; I might have already bought one if it had at least some way of externally switching or one more preset.

I also would be down for more gig footage.

  • Im interested in knowing how the UA amp pedals go into the fender FRFR 10 or 12. Also compared to the FM3 into the fender FRFRs. I have FM3 with the Laney 112 FRFR which is great but is say the UA stuff into fender better? I play at home and am looking for the best amp tone I can get at bedroom volume levels. Its a never ending quest and I'm not there yet… help please!
