  • When you realize he posted this on December 18th, aka D-18, aka every year if he does this test yearly the D-18 will be recorded on "D-18"

  • I bought a new COLLINGS D1 which in case you dont know is their equivilent of Martins D18 (used to own a 63 like an idiot i sold it) imo the mahogany dreadnought is the premier version. My Collings has changed colour over time and the sound has surpassed my expectations. Mahogany Dreadnoughts are the pick of the bunch, especially in a studio.

  • QUESTION: What studio monitor speakers would you recommend for a modest budget? I’m not doing any heavy duty recording or Intense studio work, but looking for a rich sound for casual use at home. Really value your opinion. Thanks for the time you put into your channel and honest opinions that you provide.

  • Nice project and to see how the effect on the sound really is after the wood ages.. my opinion is the soundfrequencies breaks-upp the woodstructure on a microscopic level whitout weakening the structural strength, thus effect the tone.. The cured-wood gitar i own from richwood.. it sounds really soft but rich..???? tonewise.. not sharp on the hightones and warm in the low-end on low. I love this gitar & his sound whit its cured sitkatop. Its totally differend from many gitars i own and sounds like a bariton gitar… Only it is not.

  • I do not blame you for keeping the D-18. They are fantastic, I have one that is two years old, it sits out of the case in my living room on a stand and is played every day. It sounds great. I’m interested in following your experiment with the D-18.
Mine ends up on nearly all of my recordings. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

  • 1. the top and (separately, obviously) the back and sides and maybe other bits have some optimum structure that isnt' there at production and 2. time and/or playing improve those bits at some rate, up to some limit (and then some shelf and decline). Seems too multivariant to track with a single guitar (or maybe even 111), but we'll see.

  • Dude went from finding it plain and boring to making it it's first acoustic guitar for a year. I guess the guitar grew on you.

  • Could you include a plot of the frequency response? On YouTube I can't always hear small differences in the sound.

  • Keeping it out of the case does a lot. Playing on it also, of course, but slight or even not so slight temperature and humidity changes makes the wood age faster!

  • Bourgeois sounds like burr-zhwaa but he's probably given up when it comes to Americans mangling a French surname. Definitely not booge-wa. While I'm at it, the owner of D'Addario pronounces his own name like "hi ho… da derry oh." Not Dee Addario. Short video on YouTube. And it's Ta ka mee nay, I'm afraid.

  • It’s called a tone traveler. This has been recorded and done by several people. If you want to really do something cool and different, buff some finish off and/or check the finish and see how much it changes. If that’s too invasive, you should scallop the braces, remove the junk plastic nut, saddle and pins. Show the difference as each is replaced.

  • I have a D-18 that I bought new in 1973. I doubt that you will notice any change in just one year. Give it at least 5-10 years to notice any change. At around 50 years mine opened up wonderfully.

  • i love this idea!!! I really wish i did something like this, almost as a time capsule, because i own a bunch of guitars i bought new over 20 years ago. It's an excellent experiment!!

  • Awesome! I’ve been looking at new acoustics and this was high on my list. But I’ve heard pretty good things about the Yamaha red label stuff and they are much more reachable in price.

  • Well, you should analyze the sound with an oscilloscope because your ears will change too depending on what they go through in the next year.

  • I have a D-18 that I bought in the 90's. When I was at the guitar store (Rudy's in NYC) I tried all of the acoustics that they had. I had never owned a really good quality acoustic, and I figured it was time to get one. Going into it, I was almost assuming that I'd walk out with a Gibson J-200. But no. When I had played a lot of guitars I noticed a sunburst Martin hanging at a weird spot on the wall that I hadn't noticed before. I said "What's that?". They handed me the guitar and told me it was some kind of custom D-18 that Rudy had ordered. I was on a stool looking out the front window of their second story "acoustic room". When I turned around after playing for a few minutes there were about 6-7 people standing behind me, just listening to me play. They all complimented me, but here's the thing. I'm only an "okay" guitarist, using it more as a songwriting tool than anything. They were really complimenting the guitar's sound! I knew that this was the one, then and there. I've had it all these years and it definitely sounds even better now I think. Sweeter. I don't think I'm imagining that. I never got tired of the sound or felt the need to search for something "better". Play yours in good health, as they say!

  • Very interesting project! A couple things. In my experience, a Martin sounds the best and most like a Martin with Martin brand strings whether they be 80/20's or phosphor bronze (personal choice) and especially when using uncoated strings. In your sound sample, you can tell the strings being used are coated. Coated strings seem to muffle the sound, muting or tightening the attack of the wound strings. The theory behind coated strings has always baffled me: when dirt, skin, etc. get stuck in the windings, it kills the tone…so we're going to stick plastic in the windings instead. The type and thickness of the pick being used makes a huge difference too, especially with higher-end guitars. I use either Ultex 0.88 or Tortex 0.88 depending on the tone I'm going for…Ultex is brighter and clearer sounding, while Tortex is mellower sounding. How worn in the pick is makes a difference too. Make a note of what pick you used initially. I'm looking forward to hearing how much difference a year will make!
