Ibanez SR300E vs. Yamaha TRBX304 (Jack of All Basses / Master of None?)

???? My full beginner bass course: https://yeah.bassbuzz.com/ibanezyamaha
Can these modern basses really “do it all”? This bass review will show you which is better, and how it compares to a classic Fender.

Yes, it’s time to battle the two most popular basses in this class – the Yamaha TRBX304, versus the Ibanez SR300E.

These basses both get hyped as being “versatile” – in this bass review we’ll find out just how versatile they really are.

I’ll do tons of back-to-back tone shootouts between the two in different style of music, plus look at their different features and build quality. (including the extremely hypey ‘gimmick switches’)

We’ll also compare them both to more classic Fender-style basses, to see if they can really deliver the tones we all wanna hear.

By the end of this video you’ll know:
– Which bass I recommend for beginners
– Which one is more metal ????
– Whether to go modern or classic for your first bass

  • What do you think – are these basses as versatile as they claim, or are you better off with a classic design? ????

  • Excelente comparación. No toqué ninguno de ellos, pero al menos por cómo se escucha en el video, coincido con la elección de Yamaha. Estoy bastante tentado a adquirir el siguiente modelo, el TRBX505, que ya viene con EQ de medios también.

  • I have a headphone amp with a fixed jack on it, so that angled Ibanez port would be impossible to plug into without an extension that I would certainly forget to unplug and end up draining the battery. It looks slick, but the style does sacrifice some convenience.

  • The Jackson Spectra JS3 is far better than both of these. It’s essentially the Ibanez but with better pickups and preamps for far more usable tones

  • i have a yamaha trbx174 (which is basically a lower model of the trbx304) and it was set up terribly from the factory. otherwise sounds good but seriously disappointing setup from new

  • Ok so I have a question for you then. Out of all the basses you played what would be a good one for rock and metal? Please be budget friendly I'm a beginner to Bass.

  • The Yamaha trbx 304 and 305 are all the basses I need for any gig. I have several basses that cost more and none of them are as versatile as these. Bonus they are super lightweight as well.

  • Ibanez for me, the mid punches through more, can be heard with other instruments and has a 5 piece neck that looks pretty solid.

  • I was alternating between playing a Squier, Ibanez and Yamaha bass at the music store. I kept gravitating towards the Ibanez. It felt really good in my lap, looks really cool, and felt the most fun to play. I might get one for my next purchase.

  • i am by no means an ibanez purist, after all, I own a fender guitar, but if I had to choose between an ibanez bass, and a yamaha bass, I'd tell the guy that if a yamaha bass so much as touches the ibanez i'm looking to get, I'd be pissed. To me, a yamaha instrument just sounds like someone put a block of foam over the amp, which I always hated. People always seem to crap on ibanez qc, but I never had a problem trying them in stores, or with my current micro bass, yet yamaha, every place I went to, the reviews say they have better quality, but every place I've seen with a yamaha, there was always something that made it feel like…. Like I was holding a cheep hunk of plastic made to look like a quality guitar or bass. This is also true for their other instruments.

I get that some companies suck at qc, but yamaha is what I would consider "overly praised for a quality that makes the fender squire look perfect." and ibanez being that "always crapped on, yet consistently puts out amazing instruments for a low budget" company. It's like if everyone keeps saying the quality is bad on a product you have consistently had no problems with ever, while raving about a product you have consistently found problems with.

I may try yamaha again in the future, but as far as a bass is concerned, I'm sticking to the cheep but amazing quality ibanez sr series. Because while reviews crap on them, their quality is at a level I can only describe as being what yamaha's reviews claim yamaha to be.

basically, I'd honestly say as far as basses go, ibanez or fender are the standard for beginners. If you want something cheep, but can be used by both new players and professionals, go with Ibanez. If you want something that's expensive and specialized, go with fender. If you want to waste money on something that has amazing reviews…. And disappointing in person results, go with a yamaha.

sorry for this rant, it just annoys me when people claim yamaha to have better qc than ibanez, when my experience has been the exact opposite. It feels like people are being paid to make 5 star reviews on it, when in my experience seeing them in stores, they don't perform that well, and their qc feels about the same as my $20 first act guitar just with better pickups.

  • Wow that was actually such a helpful eye-opening video for me, someone who's been playing for many years (but mainly guitar and drums).

  • I absolutely abhor the Fender sound. Not much of a sound palette. No flexibility, you get the Fender sound, and that's it. I don't care who endorses Fender basses. To me, if you're an endorsee, all you get are free basses…big whoop. I like tonal flexibility, and I've been getting it with Ibanez basses for over 30 years. Just MHO, your mileage may vary.

  • Well, I am biased both my Ibanez showed up in the video. Covid buys, I wanted the Sky Veil however champagne burst was all they had ready to ship so I took it. I thought I was not going to like the finish, I love it.
I did like the Yamaha warmer tones( it would fit certain applications). Adding a Squier & Yamaha would give me about $1600 worth to learn and grow on v. Dropping that same amount + on a Fender.
Josh, I love how you use affordable basses and guitars in your videos and you sound great.
    Thanks for your lessons.
