Hey everyone! Today we’re reviewing the Ibanez SoundGear SRMS805 multiscale 5 string bass. The SRMS is the second generation of multiscale SoundGear basses from Ibanez. Featuring a 35.5″ B string, a poplar burl top, and the classic SoundGear styling, does this bass still have a place among the ever evolving Ibanez lineup? Let’s find out!

This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with MJC Ironworks Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(125) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at www.mjcironworks.com

  • I actually like the sound of this one MORE than the sound of the EHB. The extra half-inch on the B-string makes more of a difference than I thought it would. The B is really well defined on this one. My only major gripe with this bass, and with the SR series in general, is the tight 16,5 mm string spacing. I much prefer the 18 mm string spacing of the EHB.

  • I actually the 4 string version of this. But i enjoy the sound of nordtrand big singles most, especially since I'm 99% in studio. Do those pickups fit in this bass, and would the stock pre amp be fine with them? Thanks

  • Gotta disagree with you on this one. I have 13 basses, and this bass works on all levels for me. I wouldn't change a thing. (Other than coloring in that space by the nut. ) Though I will agree that the Ibanez neck is a little tight with the 5 string models. The thin neck on a 4 string is fine.

  • In the video he says the fifth string is a B string, but I thought on the Ibanez website that string is tuned to G and the other strings are in D Standard. Is that not correct? I am a little confused.

  • Thank you for this man! As soon as you said can’t use a normal B string, that’s all I needed to know when considering this versus the headless 6 Ibanez bass. I’m glad you point things like this out, dude. Saved me a return ????

  • It is not a good bass… I dont like the dimension of sound… it is so closed… very expensive bass for sound. I think a Music Man of 320 dls can do the same.

  • Been going through dozens of videos on bothe the EHB and SRM for a while now. You are the only one I've come across to mention 2:25 the "issue" with the B String. Thanks.

  • Why would you go and buy an instrument especially a bass to change the pic ups do you buy for looks or for quality of the sound. For that matter y not just get a low cost sterling and replace the electronics. Seems alot of you need to have some sort of need to have an instrument that has way toooooo much emphasis on what it looks like rather than its sound if you dont find it to meet your needs dont talk shit about an instrument cause you dont like the pickups or pre amp.
JUST GO AND GET WHAT YOU LIKE. cause no one really cares what you know about how many Hertz or technical bullshit you know play the instrument and if you dont like it cause of the sound buy what you like a- hole plus it's the musician and heart and soul that makes the sound not technology

  • The only thing wrong with this bass that I can see is that gap between the fretboard and headstock. That’s unacceptable, shame on you Ibanez.

  • Just need to put some Ernie Ball cobalt strings on it. Best strings! Less squeak, more clarity. Have some on my Fender ultra 5 (mochaburst) and my Ibanez sr1605 dw (autumn sunset sky) basses. I just bought a SRMS806 and it has adjustable string spacing like my 1605 dw.

  • After doing the research I'm bummed because of love the style and finish on this specific body. The twilight poplar burl is just ???? but like he points out the headstock and transition at the nut looks like dookie

  • Standard daddario 5 string sets work with this bass perfectly. No issues with length at all.

  • Huh. So, the SRMS805 is "entry level". Surprise to me. The SRMS805 costs $899, retail. The SRF705, $1049, retail. I know; I own one of each. It's a far sight from "entry level", and characterizing it that way seems disingenuous, at best. Outright insulting, at worst. I couldn't even listen to this YouTuber finish denigrating not just one, but two of my favorite basses – the SRMS805 and the SRF705. This came off as very condescending to people who don't need, or want, much higher end basses. Not all of us can afford a custom bass or a Dingwall. I love my, as this dude called them, "entry level basses", and I find his dismissive tone incredibly insulting. Gods know, I'd love to get free elite basses gifted to me constantly to play and compare to the real working basses that actual, not-internet-famous-bassists can afford, but I don't star on a YouTube channel. More the fool me, apparently. I can only afford one pair of thousand dollar "entry level" basses, and those took me months to save for each. Most of us don't get our basses for free. We work our asses off for them. But thanks for insulting the hell out of the gear those of us who aren't 'internet famous' can actually afford. You really could have presented this in a manner that didn't come off so deeply dismissive of those players who love and appreciate our mid-level basses.

  • I have this bass, but want to replace the electronics. I bought the Darkglass tone capsule, but I think I’d like to replace the pickups as well. I know you used the Aguilar DCB-D4’s for the EHB, but I was wanting to know if I can install those into this bass. Thanks!

  • I have the 4 string version of this bass, and i absolutely love it. no special string needed. i would argue the fan is good for those wanting to dip their toe in the multi scale world. I go back and forth between this and a non multi bass, almost effortlessly. Then again, I wanted a thin body, that felt good in my hands, and had a finish i didn't hate. I didn't care about multi scale whatsoever… my one complaint is access to the truss rod. i didn't get the included wrenches, and i can't find one long enough, that doesn't interfere with the pickup.

  • I tried out the 6 string version years ago (red/orange finish). String spacing for a 6 strings was really nice.

I sometimes forget how much I enjoy playing ibanez basses. There's "better" brands, but these just fit like a glove for me

  • Regarding the comment on the perpendicular head stock departure line next to the angled nut, I would like to share an engineer's perspective, that it may be difficult to have a headstock that bends at a slanted line that is not perpendicular to the axis of the neck. The whole headstock might end up looking wonky as it bends backwards but also toward the G string direction. I believe this dilemma could be what prompted Ibanez to develop the EHB headless series at first place, because they no longer have to worry about the funny headstock bend angle!

  • I have this bass and the EHB1505 and I really prefer the nice round tone of the Bartolinis in this bass over the EHB. Tighter string spacing takes some getting used to but once I did it provided less finger fatigue on longer gigs. I think this bass is great!

  • I can't wait for the Ibanez BTB806MS's to come to stores. That 37" on the B is really going to give Dingwall a run for their money
