Improve Your Amplified Classical Guitar Sound: Transducer Pickup Installation Guide

In this video I’ll show you the tools and steps required to install a transducer pickup into a Takamine acoustic or classical guitar. The same procedure applies for virtually any transducer pickup. This was probably easier than most because the CTP-2 preamp inside this particular Takamine TH5C already has an inbuilt receptacle for a transducer pickup in addition to the pre-installed palathetic bridge pickup.

Equipment:

– Takamine ‘Transducer pickup: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Takamine-Soundboard-Transducer-Pickup-Guitar-Hand-Saw-Oud-Ukulele-Kalimba-/222290676559
– Blunt nose pliers
– Needle nose pliers
– Cable ties
– GoPro/Mirror
– iPad

The GoPro and the iPad were only used to allow me and you to see inside the guitar. I used those to show me where to place the transducer and to let you see the inside of the guitar and the installation process.
I recommend installing the pickup on the treble side of the bridge. Don’t attach it to a brace, rather, attach it directly to the underside of the bridge.

  • It was time to install this pickup! I've had it for over a year but I never seemed to have the time to install it when I was on tour. This installation was largely due to the fact that I'm going to be recording some full play-throughs of some of my most popular pieces on YouTube. The full play-throughs will be part of some courses that I am developing 😀

  • Thank you for this helpful video. There's not a lot of info about adding a second pickup to the Takamine CTP. I went a slightly different route and added a Schatten SBT to the bridge plate.

  • Wouldn't it be simpler to take the preamp out before installing the pickup and hooking up the leads? This also allows you to adjust the gain and tone switches on the bottom of the preamp.

  • You said that you will publish video with demo of this pickup later on, but I can't seem to find that video? Could you please post link to that video here? Thanks!
