Do you think some amount of weight lifting helps? Can it negatively affect speed? Or help with such things as endurance?
Excellent video – as always I would say. One question about your bass tone – how do you get that punchy tone – how do you eq your bass? Did you probably already do a video about it that I missed?
Thank Dan
I really like your videos
Thank you Dan! Cheers!
Off topic question but, what kind of bass is that?
Hello Dan. I have tried that thump thing. That 3 way down, up and index finger. It is still rubbish how I do it. The main reason I don’t like it. Too many noise from the other strings. You have to be really precise and I don’t know how to rest my hand. Usually I use my thumb to rest my hand and only then can I be precise with my finger work.
If I do it fast my left hand cannot mute the other strings enough. Maybe I just have to work at it.
And what you say in the beginning of the video that you have to curl your fingers on your left hand. That is not wise. Always keep your fingers as flat to the strings as possible. When I do my arpeggios and play the 5 note variations.
Note B on the E string ( 7th fret ) I use my left hand to mute the strings cause my right hand cannot, I play the E string.
Left middle fingers on the note and all against the other strings.
Next.
Left index finger on the D sharp ( 6 fret A string ) and flat against the D and G string and right hand I mute with my pinky the E string
Next.
Left pinky on the F sharp ( 9 fret A string ) and again flat against the D and G string and right hand the same.
Next.
Left middle finger on the A ( 7th fret D string ) and flat against the G string and right hand I mute with my pinky and ring finger the E and A string. In that order.
Next.
Left index finger on the C sharp ( 6th fret on the G string) and my right hand I use my pinky for muting the E string, my ring finger for the A string and my index finger to mute the D string and play the note with my middle finger.
That is the only way ( for me ) to play them clearly with no additional ringing.
I really like your bass riff you played with that drum loop. Very nice.
Cool video by the way. ????????????????
Your teaching style and bass skills are excellent. I really enjoy your videos!
The only thing I would add to this one is that bass players can more quickly perfect their ability to play in time by recording themselves with their drum machine or metronome and listening back to it.
When I was a beginner I felt like my timing was pretty solid after 3 or 4 months of playing with a drum machine. I was surprised when my girlfriend, who was also a musician, mentioned that it didn’t sound like I was in sync with the drums. I recorded myself playing, listened back and realized she was right. It was especially noticeable when slapping and popping where you could hear a lot of flams.
Nowadays I can instantly feel it if I slip out of the pocket — like when coming out of an ambitious fill — but in the early days, so much of my concentration was devoted to getting the technique right, I was often unaware of my timing. Recording helped with that.
Beautifull bas, great sound.
Very well
Great lesson…thanks.
Nice lesson, practical wisdom.
Around 7:30 you mention if you have a hand injury, eg, arthritis, adapt. I used to play a full scale (34") bass and then I got old. Now I play short scale (mostly 30") and it makes a big difference. I also gave up the one finger per fret technique when near the nut; it makes things a little more irregular since I might use a different pattern when playing low vs higher up on the fingerboard, but avoiding pain and injury is more important.
Dan whats up!
Excellent! Thank you!
Your videos have helped me tremendously. Because of the simple fact is that you take your time fingering each fret along with the scales and tabs. Super helpful.
Thanks, Dan much appreciated. Have a great day. Always looking forward to the next video. Do you have courses on music Theory?
Why do you always like 4 strings bass guitar what is unique about it?
I really like your videos, always wait for them, appreciated!
Useful, thanks.
One thing (apart from fret buzz) that I cannot seem to control is the sound of the strings hitting the frets. Could this be down to your point on holding the fingers closer to the fret board?
Cheers.
Thanks! Great tips
