Is a guitar’s tone knob pointless to control highs when using distortion?

In this video I discuss whether or not it sounds better using the guitar’s tone knob to dampen the highs instead of changing it on the pedal or at the amp. Some people prefer to simply turn the tone control on the guitar tone. Some don’t. What do you prefer?

Oh, and I realize my high E string went out of tune while making this video.

  • if the sound after the drive is suckly high, rolling down the tone knob on the guitar make it double suck.

  • Just something about cut filter … Guitar ; yes/no … E Q ,,, preamp or effect ; no/maybe … But I'm with you on not wanting 2 cut the tone on the guitar … It's all about adding & taking away … Just don't like the though of it … Got a great channel … Good stuff … I sat doing what ya talking about ,,, till my legs fell asleep … Switching back & forth … I not a high-end type ( bass player now all ) but something is missing when you cut the tone on the guitar … Thanks …
    I don't know I think it's the ATTACK !!!

  • Tone knob? ???? I get rid of the tone knobs and put the volume in the lower tone hole and have two holes with nothing in them

  • Tone knob is totally useless if you use a good amp with balanced eq. I've never heard a crushing tone with the tone at low levels.

  • As a beginner (with access to a custom guitar maker) I’m thinking whether I should ask him to build a guitar without tone controls?
Like, learn to play first; and any tone adjustments can be made on the amp.
Also, visually, I think a guitar just looks ‘cleaner’ without all the knobs.
    What do you recommend?
    Thank you.

  • What about the PTB circuit? I think is the most versatile tone system from the guitar: a regular LPF knob to tame the highs (great for jazz and warmer tones) and a very important HPF knob to tame the lows and reducing muddiness (great for rock, metal and overall distorted tones). Why is not a standard today?

  • I like the tone control at the pedal/amp, but I’m now gonna try using it more at the guitar now. It makes more sense to do it at the guitar, which much easier on the fly

  • Your idea of what's harsh or spikey on bridge pup is a little distorted" The strat sounded nice, too round lacking some character when you messed too much w/tone k obs..IMO only. Probably others too..
Keep'em coming though. I've learned that you like a more rounded sound from your strats & teles. I could be very wrong too.
    Thanks David
    I sure like your pedals
    I need a 57 Tweed overdrive ..help????????

  • I like the guitar's tone knob in general, but when it comes to controlling that nasty crap that comes out of most distortion pedals, you must use the tone knob on the pedal. I agree Brian that in the case of distortion pedals, post-distortion high frequency roll off is essential.

  • I usually have my tone knob turned halfway, and use my pedals, pick-up selector, and amp to change the EQ, but I find that some songs really need a more trebly sound that I can only achieve but I turning up the tone knob on my guitar, and some pitch shift down sounds work a lot better with the tone knob all the way down, especially if you're trying to get a bass or baritone sound. Definitely think there are applications for the tone knob that may go overlooked.

  • I have the TBX tone on my Strat and keep it set in the middle. Just use it for various sound changes on the fly. Between the 5 way, TBX,and Lace Sencers I got a lot of options for on the fly tone control.

  • Wide open tone/volume and stomp boxes have their place.

But, try finding a guitar (with nice electronics), set the volume/tone pots at “5”. Plug into a nice tube amp, turn it up. Set the amp’s eq so you have a nice, clean rhythm sound. Then, when you need more, open up the guitar’s volume (tubes start to compress). Your guitar will never feel more alive!
