Is Steve Lukather the Definitive Yacht Rock Guitarist? | The 100 Guitars Podcast
Steve Lukather is one of the most documented guitarists in the hit-making biz. He grew up as an L.A. teen with a crew of fellow musicians who would go on to make their livings at the top of the session scene. By the time Lukather and his pals formed Toto, they were already experienced chart-toppers. The band went on to success with hits including the rockin’ “Hold the Line,” breezy, bouncing “Rosanna,” and the timeless “Africa.”
As a session player, Lukather’s reign in the ’70s and ‘80s extended from Olivia Newton-John to Herbie Hancock to Michael Jackson. And alongside Michael McDonald—whose “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)” included Lukather’s distinctive rhythm riffage—Daryl Hall and John Oates, Kenny Loggins, Peter Cetera, and Christopher Cross (among many others) he may have earned the title of yacht rock’s number one guitar player.
On this episode of the 100 Guitarists podcast, we’re talking about our favorite Lukather tracks, from his best rhythm parts to his most rippin’ solos. And even though he spends most of his playing time with the biggest names, we’ve managed to call up a few deep cuts.

That it too narrow a hole to put Luke in. We had Cropper in the 60s and 70s playing on and help write damn near every hit on the radio then and Luke in the 80s and 90s doing the same thing. His "fingerprint" is on everything from that era. Rock, pop, adult contemporary all of it. An American icon. Check out his sit down with Beato.
Check out Never Walk Alone from Los Lobomomys. Also, Running with the Night, Hard To Say I'm Sorry, all the Quincy Jones stuff. He was a pretty seasoned player by the age of 19 when cutting the first Toto demos in between sessions. One of the best guitarists of his generation.
Really? Lukather has forgotten more than you two will ever know. And he’s seriously NOT yacht rock. He’s been rocking the world since before your daddy was out of diapers. The Luke deserves all the respect!
5 Minutes 28 seconds that how long before i stopped watching !
I don't agree with you guys that much of the Toto or Steely Dan stuff sounds stale and flat on all streaming platforms. You are totally right if you listen to this kind of music on Spotify but if you subscribe to Tidal or Qobuz it is not the case. Most everything on there is HighRes which means not CD quality (44Khz 16-bit) but 192khz 24-bit. A had an A-B listening session the other day comparing my favorite vinyl and CD Toto and Steely Dan albums (Fahrenheit, The Seventh One, & Tambu and Aja, Gaucho & The Royal Scam) with the ones on Tidal and they sound much better to my ears on the streaming platform! But: it is all personal taste, right!????
YUC ! Piss up a rope Talk Talk ?
Bad title
"Animal" is unavailable on streaming services because Jean-Michel Byron is the vocalist, and none of the band wants to hear those tracks. However, they are excellent, and I highly recommend them. They are on "Past to Present 1977–1990", the tracks are "Love Has the Power", "Out of Love", and "Animal." Sorry, Luke, but these songs deserve to be heard.
Toto has 4 BILLION + streams on Spotify. Hold the Line went 1 Billion this week. 50 million records sold worldwide.
You are not correct! Plus billions more on Youtube and..
Its all on there to see on Spotify.
1 minute, 26 seconds….too lame, you tricked me into with Steve Lukather's name on the label.
If u look up cool in dictionary, steve lukes picture is next to it
That statement belongs right next to “John Mayer the ultimate punk rock hero”
i think you do not know what you are talking about. EMG listen please, are you serious about sponsoring this thing???
Yacht Rock???? What are you smoking Lads????????
What makes him so good to me is how he puts jazz in his rock playing!
Agreed to both statements.
Holy crap I hate the term "yacht rock". Nothing is less rock'n'roll than "yacht rock". It's unfair to Lukather to label him with the term. He deserves more respect.
I would put Steve right next to Eddie Van Halen!
