When it comes to jazz virtuoso Julian Lage, you’d be hard-pressed to find an electric guitarist who uses less gear. “Any time I’ve [used too much equipment], there’s an awkwardness where I’m still grappling with the fact that I play here,” he says, gesturing to his guitar, then gesturing to his amp, “but the sound comes out there.” He continues, “It sounds like a joke, but it’s been a struggle for me. Any time there’s layers or filters or anything, I feel dissociated.” Of course, Lage’s rig, which buoys his clean, no-frills tone, makes sense for a musician like himself—whose playing often comes across fluidly, and as gently as his personality.
For Lage, that fluidity stems from his conception of music as a language. “I think that the way people speak is often more unfettered,” Lage told Premier Guitar in 2021. “There might not be an obvious correlation between the way people speak in a lecture and the notes on the guitar. But it’s just a little stretch of the imagination to see that those are pitches, those are rhythms, those are phrases.”
On View with a Room, Lage’s second release on the hallowed Blue Note Records, he’s offering a fresh, bold continuation of the conversation he’s created over the years. The album features his latest ensemble, made up of himself, bassist Jorge Roeder, and drummer Dave King—but this time, he’s added the legendary Bill Frisell. Together, the musicians help to expand Lage’s body of work with performances of 10 of his original compositions.
While on tour for the album, Lage invited PG’s John Bohlinger to the soundcheck before his show at Brooklyn Bowl inn Nashville to share his insights into why he likes a straightforward rig and “honest” tone. In the interview, Lage elaborates on his three main guitars (his Nachocaster, Collings signature, and ’55 Les Paul), explains why he prefers low volume on his amps, and offers a remarkably brief tour of his pedalboard.

I think he jizzed a little playing that 55 Gibson goldtop 15:57
????
Damn, that thing he played on the Les Paul in the middle was just insanely beautiful. Can’t help but smile when he plays.
I'm lucky enough to have seen him live twice, and both times the've been some of the best concerts i've been to. I think it was the concert he played the Collins and he only used the bigsby once and never touched it again. What a great and humble musician we have amongst us!
Does any one know what guitar straps is he using?
I can't wait until Julian turns 45 and starts playing country western.
I strive to be as nice as this dude, but I got a lot of work to do.
When it comes to volume Julian is nowhere near to Nigel !
What he played at the end was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard a guitar play
Anyone else see Julian play wit h Goose?
Amazing playing and tones! He has a big heart! ✌????
I want to be Julian Lage when I grow up
I would definitely let him choke me ????????
What a hunk ????❤
Just wonderful! What a fascinating guy.
Christopher Guest??? One of my fav directors (Top 3) and one of my fav guitarists (Top 3) are buddies?? Wow!!
Fantastic interview thank you both!
I love to hear him talk about music… he has so much joy in his heart
It is absolutely just amazing that Julian is playing the Spinal Tap guitar. What a musician, what a guy.
This is wonderful. I’m a recent convert to Lange thanks to Beato & Paul Davids and really wanted to know more about his setup. I’m a huge tele fan and to see jazz played so beautifully on one is fantastic
Would loved to have found out what prompted Julian to use a very pedestrian Dunlop Tortex pick with cost about $.50 rather than his previous $35-40 Blue Chip pick. He was one of the Blue Chip pick poster-boys. Just curious.
This dude is a treasure. So timeless. Reminds me of a Jazzy William Tyler.
I had never heard of him when I saw him with Nels Cline 4 in Boise Idaho a few years ago. It was transformative for me, as a guitarist, and the person he is, or at least who he seems to be, validates my life experience in a poignant way.
I couldn't understand clearly when he speaks about the pickup in his Nachocaster. What is the name of the pickup builder and the model? Anybody an idea?
#hairpiece
he played and talked for us music students at sf state back in like 2016ish. i recorded the audio of it and still listen to it every now and again. his playing was so good but more than that his insight was so important to me. what a great and interesting guy.
A great interview. The interviewer understands what’s interviewee is saying and has enough knowledge about both the interviewee and instruments/equipments to say just enough to encourage the master to talk more. Julian seems always eager to share everything he knows about what’s being asked maybe especially so here because of the interviewer. The settings on amplifier shocked me also and the demonstration on his effector really showed settle but clear contribution. Again a great interview. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Gotta love Julian. Busting the loud guitar amp myth in the most gentlemanly way possible.
Everything comes out from under this man’s fingers just knocks me out. I love it
Having treble and bass fairly low makes complete sense: it’s the only way to bring the mids up, which is a key element of his tone
I’d love to do this interview but I gotta amp up my hair first ????
What a great musician and a lovely man, The great ones are usually humble like Julian
Beautiful video!
This guy is amazing.
Glad to find another friend who never switches off the neck pickup.
I'm lying of course, sometimes I switch to the bridge. But the other 3 modes on my Ibanez? completely unused 🙂
Wow I really do love his sound and ideas, also that les paul sounds ridiculously good too!
I love seeing his joy when he plays that Goldtop!
Yje ease with which je plays is mind blowing everything is sooo perfectly played into ation phrase feel timing emotional content tone wow and eyes closed ❤❤now ❤
Man. This dude is so dope. He did an entire tour on the bridge just to feel it out oh my god I could never haha
His guitar is repressed, he’s too nice to it.
Julian got me to pick up the guitar again after 25 years. I went from metal head to nothing but a UA Woodrow dialed all the way down. Trying to learn how to control tone with nothing but your hands is incredibly satisfying.
That’s quite a gift ……

I like his music, but his comportment and relaxed style makes him such a lovable character. I'd love to sit down outside of a coffee shop with my telecaster and jam
I think he's possibly the best guitarist on the planet right now.
Beatifull sounds, saludos desde España 😉
