  • Old guitar player here… so the whole removing chrome pickup covers / tone / gain thing… ughhh. 1:15:55 So like Phil explained, yes, before amps had unlimited gain AND sustain… think 1975 to 1982… us guitar players were doing everything we could to get more sustain / gain without turning a 100 watt amp on 10. AND in the course of doing this we modified our guitars. And soon if you wanted to stand out as a serious player you would also want to give the appearance that you modified or hot rodded your guitar…. even if those mods had negligible affect… we "heard" with our eyes. Trust me.. we still hear with our eyes. But, we tried adding brass nuts, brass plates that attached to back of headstocks (talk about neck dive !), we tried brass saddles, heavy steel bridges, bigger strings gauges, higher output pickups….. and yes.. we even tried taking the chrome pickup covers off.

BUT.. a lot of guys took off the pickup covers because it gave the appearance that they had hot rodded their guitar. Again.. stock was bad… old fashioned… modified guitars looked cool.. hot rodded… it made you look like you were a serious player who wasn't satisfied with "stock" guitars. I learned lutherie in the early 80's because I started modifying my guitars. Soon all my friends were bringing me their guitars to work on. And soon I started building them.

And by the late 1980's I was restoring old 50's and 60's Vintage Gibsons and Fenders which everyone had been doing those very same mods to. lolsss…. it was kinda crazy. We were kinda crazy. But trust me.. so are you. Guitar players are still kinda crazy and we still hear with our eyes. Every generation has to learn their life lessons for themselves. So go on you crazy kids… put them brass nuts on, screw those pickups directly into the guitar body to get more sustain, and stick a cheap $50 transistorized distortion pedal in front of a $3500 all hand wired tube amp to get that "natural" distortion and "sag". You may not have invented crazy.. but you can certainly perpetuate it and most importantly have fun doing it.

  • 1:01:22 To answer the question of “Why do companies choose to stay in California instead of moving manufacturing to another state?”

It’s simply because the taxes are worth it. I look at it as the cost of not having to live in a state like Arizona, Colorado, Texas, Georgia, et al. To some of us it’s just worth it. Especially, Southern California. I get that California is an easy target and it’s not for everyone, especially politically, but there is a lifestyle and energy here that is amazing and one that you just cannot find anywhere else, and it’s worth every penny.

  • So you're talking up Kiesel. I'm sorry but they are over priced like Gibson's. For example, there sandbkasted guitar is $2200 on sale from $2400, no returns or refunds. Ash body, richlite fingerboard, walnut neck. For almost 1/4th the price is PRS SE sandblasted for $594. Ash body, rosewood fingerboard(not richlite), maple neck. I'm not paying Gibson or Kiesel $2400 for a richlite board. Period. Youre saying that they should increase their prices by 20-30%? That will certainly put them out of business. And as a musician that can't afford even a $1000 guitar they are not even in the picture along with Gibson. I don't own any Gibson's and never will. I don't like them and their "holier than thou" attitude suing everyone for ripping them off when they ripped off a lot of their designs firm other companies. I will only buy Epiphone. And I do. And just the way Gibson aquired(had stolen Epiphone from Ep)i is evidence right there. Gibson bought Epiphone for $20,000 and I know back then was a lot if money.. It is the equivalent of $250,000 today. They literally paid nothing for Epiphone. And Epi left all if the templates, his designs and future projects. Everything. The whole factory. Essentially Gibson ripped off Epi and took advantage if his weakness for their gain. Aside from the Les Paul which was Les???? Pauls designs Gibson didn't design anything. The rest was Epi's designs that Gibson ripped off.

  • Your leaving out firefly guitars, they are the Harley Benton's of the US, most in the US don't shop for Harley Benton's because of foreign taxing,& shipping costs and you also left out all the chibsons,& Amazon specials like grote, West Creek etc, nice of you to give the big brands all the business, but that's not what's selling out here in the US on the street, how about Ibanez too.

  • Hey Phil, Did you have any issues registering your Tonex one and did you get the bundled software? Some say buying a used Tonex is a horrible experience. Thanx

  • There is a another way to win at GC too. Trade in during their Black Friday sale, 15% off new items up $1k off (usually it's 20% every year though). So then if you get 60% of used value, add that 15%, then also add Reverb's 10% in fees and you are 85% of your full value. There is also 10% off used sales throughout the year too. Is that extra 15% really worth all of the drama reverb and/or local sales could be? Up to you. Phil, I don't remember if you mentioned they WILL do 10% off anything new when trading in. So, you could trade in a $50 pedal and get 10% off a $3k guitar. Some stuff I will trade in and trade up, some stuff I take cash and anything higher end goes on reverb since then you are loosing too much. FYI managers can override trade in values if they find that UVM(their system) is off. I was told this recently changed and they are no longer allowed to do that though. I think they just need to be better at used. Take better pics for online, offer more sales on used gear.

  • All you really need to know is sellers lose, buyers win ! but like you put it, its a question of convenience for sellers. either your willing to sell cause your desperate for fast cash, or impatient about buying an other guitar and don't have the full amount and willing to sacrifice , lose equity value for your impatience to obtain it…

  • I’m sorry but there is no way Paul Reed Smith and Jeff Kiesel at 47 are/were the same. Yes, they may both want to make the best guitar possible, but what’s between the ears is not comparable. One is a scientist/engineer at heart. The other a craftsman who also likes to race cars. PRS guitars are engineered to the nth degree. Kiesel are basically copies of what already exists with some modifications.

  • Phil, something has changed on your youtube settings. I have youtube premium, which allows for background playback. This has always allowed me to listen to your podcast while i'm out walking, with my phone in my pocket. Recently that changed…but ONLY on your podcast. Now it pauses every couple of minutes…I have to pull my phone out of my pocket to get it to start again. All my other podcasts behave normally. I did some research, and it looks like that individual channels can set background playback on or off. You might want to check.

  • Why isn't the guitar checked when it comes to the store? Do the work / check upfront so you know, that everything is the store is OK to buy.

  • If GC keeps trading out, they will be stuck with useless inventory. If everyone comes in with Harley Benton's and Squires, and do 2-1, 3-1, etc trades to walk out with Fenders and PRSs, GC will be stuck with a bunch of used Benton's that probably have no market. Harley Benton is already a bargain guitar, people aren't looking for a used Harley to get it on a deal.

  • That Tempe Guitar Center is what every guitar center needs to look like if they want to be successful. I tried to sell a guitar at that location, but they turned it down because it had some dings and that they were pickier with their used inventory than other locations. It shows because their used gear is clean and well set up.

The Scottsdale one is the opposite and has used inventory with rusted hardware, new guitars with unplayable setups, and any guitar over $500 locked away. They need some consistency between stores!

  • Hey Phil, love the channel man! I always wonder if you trade into GC and want to buy something that’s not at the store but used online if everything still applies?

  • With the guitar centre thing, what happens if the guitar was stolen? Can guitar centre hold the money to the seller until it’s confirmed not stolen? Or is guitar centre out of pocket if it’s stolen?

  • I dont think Chibson are a thread to Gibson. If any, they would only reduce some sales from epiphone or tokai.

  • What do you mean horses don't play acoustic guitars? Do you not remember Quick Draw McGraw? El KaBong always had an acoustic guitar with him.

Low two digits is not a lot of guitars.

  • I brought about 6 guitars and 5 amps to two different GC in my area and they didn't wait for anything. I think the employees snagged them up because they never went on the floor or the website. Sometimes GC sucks.

  • Their return policy is what helps me buy from them. If I get the thing home and I don't like it, I just take it back.

  • The Tonex One is a great idea – I had one for a few weeks to check it out, and ultimately returned it. There was just way too much background noise when powered by its 9v jack, especially for the overdrive settings. This goes away when it's powered instead through its USB-C port though. YMMV…
Also, love my Kiesel Zeus; really great features for its price. I now view other expensively priced guitars by comparing them with it.
