When i hold the pick as you indicate, i feel like its a better grip and needs less force to hold, but when i try to pick the strings, it hits them at an angle and makes a scrappy sound. If i want it to hit them perpendicular, i have to twist my wrist so unnaturally that doesnt make sense. Anyone else having this problem? What am i doing wrong?

I’ve just started to play with a pick as I want to become more versatile with the bass, I’ve been playing finger style for many years but want to learn to play with a pick. My down picking is good and I can mute the strings which are not needed, but I can’t seem to mute other strings when down and up picking. Any suggestions on what I should do?

Sorry, but this is a lesson how to get carpal tunnel syndrome and your technique is just like compilation of "how to NOT play with the pick". I'm primarly a pick bass player and my advice would be checking out Carol Kaye's technique. Heavy pick, playing near the neck and flat wrist – certainly not with guitar-style thumb moves (and some muting – for example by using felt over the bridge – to get rid of unnecesary overtones) – are essential in pickstyle, arching your hand so unnatural may cause damage in the long run. Just google "Why I keep hammering the Carol Kaye pick method" and read what JimmyM wrote on the subject.
