Let’s get serious: Bass Guitar into a Boss HM-2… (Does it Chainsaw?)

Part 3 of science class with Dome!

I try to get a Swedish Death-Metal Sound like Entombed, Dismember and Bloodbath out of an Ibanez 5-string bass guitar into a typically Metal guitar sound and a bass amp.

Bonus: Fingerstyle
Even more Bonus: Slapping (“It’s not a bug, it’s a feature!”)

  • late replying but: according to CIRCLE OF TONE on here, the bass sound of Napalm Death Scum side A (Nick Bullen) is a Super Fuzz clone in series into an HM-2 into a Laney head, while the guitars were a little less filthy with Dist+ into a Marshall. JK Broadrick’s guitar playing was always adapted to staying present without getting in the way of nasty bass. crazy as the bass sounds on that recording, I doubt it was even nearly dimed especially since there was not yet any culture around doing that in 1986.

  • Use a boss ls2 and blend in the clean tone to maintain the low end. Also cut most of the gain. Hm2 is my favorite bass pedal.

  • Instant respect any time I see someone repping Edge Of Sanity (which is rare)! And thanks for this video it helped me shape my HM-2 bass tone

  • In these moment, you realize it sound more like an angry fuzz than a distortion pedal.
I actually use the HM2w with the treble rolled down, with a plex. On a bass, on an Ashdown Amp. Love it ❤️

  • BASS player here. lower frequencies tend to cancel gain on pedals. Try that with flat-wounds and the HM-2 will transform into an overdrive, that's why my DS-2 30 years ago sounded weak……… nylon flat-wounds!!!!
Thank you for the bass demo!!!!!

  • …as a fan of grind, I approve of distorting the hell out of a bass.
…hope your bass player is watching 😛

  • ODB-3 into HM-2 into HM-3, though I have the tone controls at 2 o'clock for bass and 10 o'clock for treble on all pedals.
My other board is an Arion Metal Master split to a Deluxe Big Muff Pi to one amp and a Ghost Warmjet V to another amp.

  • So I have the Arion Metal master and the HM2, I like my HM2 through the bass but I personally think the Metal Master works better for bass for my setup. Try it there is a bit more low end in the metal master.

Also I hook up my HM2 through my synth rig as well and love the way it can drive my 303 knock off groove box.

Love the channel.. keep it chainsaw

  • What a glorious racket.
Indeed HM2 on bass when your guitarists are running them too is abit unmanageable, and you're narrowing the frequencies you can cover by mixing things up. I played in a band called Vallenfyre for the final few years and for those reason I went through Ibanez Phathed, finally landing with the Amptweaker Tight Metal Bass with their awesome dry low control. That works incredibly well with the full HM2 band format. Another one I learned from Rotten Sound is DS1 with a Sansamp Bass Driver to FOH, that way you can dial in the dry lows as required. Anyway, great video… and lots of fun. Cheers.

  • Bad ass! And yes; you ARE completely famous…. I shall be trying this over the weekend…. likely with the hm300….

That was fun. Reminds me slightly of Cliff Burton???????????????

  • i've used it in parallel with the bass rolled back and little to no gain, after a tube screamer. i think it works alright blended in with the dry sound

  • bass into hm2 has been my go to for years, but it needs a decent mid scoop to sound fully aggressive.GODFLESH-STREETCLEANER is the best example of this.

  • DON'T EVER slap bass in heavy metal related context!!! Just DON'T!????????????

KMA WURM can be tweaked to use with bass, since it has better eq and those internal switches and pots. You may want to try it out?????

    Greetings from Finland.????????????????????
