Lloyd Baggs | AEG-1

In this video, Lloyd Baggs shares his journey that led to the creation of the AEG-1 Acoustic Electric Guitar.

In the 1970s, Lloyd began building acoustic guitars, crafting instruments for renowned artists like Ry Cooder, Jackson Browne, Graham Nash, and Janis Ian. His passion for the guitar soon grew into a mission to faithfully amplify its natural sound for live performance. This pursuit led to the development of the LB6, LR Baggs’ first pickup, and marked the beginning of our company’s innovations in acoustic amplification.

Over the years, LR Baggs has redefined live acoustic performance with groundbreaking advancements that now extend to the AEG-1, designed by Lloyd Baggs and produced in collaboration with our great friends at Crafter Guitars. Lloyd’s dual expertise as a luthier and a pickup designer allowed us to craft a guitar and its electronics in harmony, finely tuning the system for this instrument. Amplified by the revolutionary HiFi Duet system—featuring HiFi Bridge Plate Pickups and a studio-quality Silo Microphone—the AEG-1 delivers unmatched versatility for stages big and small.

The AEG-1 is more than a guitar—it’s the culmination of a lifetime devoted to enhancing acoustic performance for musicians everywhere.

“My desire to faithfully amplify the acoustic guitars I was building as a luthier led to the creation of our pickup company. It became my life’s work to eliminate every obstacle to playing live acoustic guitar, making it easy, inspiring, and fun. The AEG-1 is the realization of this philosophy, and I’m incredibly proud of this instrument. I hope it brings you inspiration and joy for years to come!”

  • For the record, luthier is not pronounced with a TH sound. Guitars are in the lute family so it's really pronounced "lute-ear". Whenever I hear a 'luthier' mis-pronounce the word, I'm convinced they really aren't a luthier, but a wood worker or a furniture maker, so I don't hire them. Ask a graduate of Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery.

  • Please excuse if someone brought this up already… isn’t all that work of the resonating backside of the guitar defeated once it’s strapped on and resting on the players body?

  • Finally someone to take on the Fender Acoustasonic guitars

Interesting headstock considering the Takemine story

  • I have multiple LR Baggs pickups in my guitars and I really like this experimentation and I think it should continue. But I just don't hear acoustic resonance in this guitar. I'm not convinced it sounds better than a Fender Acoustasonic. But I do like the innovation, particularly with the neck support though, I don't know if the overly stiff sides kill some resonance.

  • Not getting it. I think this is the guitar equivalent of the Sinclair C5. Love the pickups. Not getting the guitar. Too modern. Ugly sorry. Go standard and do it better then change it But currently r looks won’t work I fear. Hope I’m wing as I’m a fan of your stuff. Except this

  • All of that and you made it a bolt on neck. Shameful. If it could at least have been able to accept normal guitar pickups so a humbucker or a single coil could or 2, be installed, than Id compromise and say ok, now I need to look at this. Since the electronics are stuck to whatever they are, Im not interested. ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  • Sounds like the best and most balanced acoustic sound I've never captured with a mic. Well done, LR Baggs!
    When nylon?

  • I wish an independent drum manufacturer would rethink acoustic drums the way you have. Acoustic drums are too damn loud! They don’t have any bottom! They sound harsh and fragile and angular all at the same time. Well, I guess, first, there was a pianoforte, and then the piano we all know.

  • I am loving this guitar! I am hoping you may eventually offer an upgraded model or a neck purchase option with larger frets and an ebony fingerboard!

  • Would it be possible to learn how the recordings in this video were made? Were they recorded directly into the board? Was an amp used? The Hi Fi Duet has a lovely sounding preamp itself and I am curious if any other preamps were used in the recording process. I would be thrilled to learn that the recordings are completely raw with no production during or after the recording.

  • Thank you for sharing this information sir. I have reviewed the Fender Acoustasonics and they all failed my tests for acoustic and their electric options across the board. Your guitar SOUNDS like a proper acoustic guitar. Your price point is also less than that of my thin body Emerald (an outstanding instrument) and that is a very good thing for the marketplace. i recommend your pickups, particularly the HiFi series (I advocate the HiFi Duet myself) to my clients because they sound like a guitar and not all nasal like other options. Congratulations on your new instrument and wishing you great success.

  • Looks like the Fender Acoustisonics. In the same class as that and the Godin A6 Ultra. I noticed my top starting to warp around the bridge and noticed people were saying the same thing about the Fender Acoustisonic. I hope the bracing is much better on this one.
