Can a modeler this inexpensive really deliver quality tones? In this episode of Six String Lab, we take a deep dive into the M-VAVE ANN Black Box to find out.

Using the Tonex as a comparison tool, we explore:
???? A detailed listening test to evaluate the tones.
????️ A full tutorial on creating ANN captures using Google Colab.
???? Frequency analysis to scientifically measure the accuracy of the captures.

Whether you’re curious about budget gear or want to see how it stacks up scientifically, this episode is packed with insights and practical tips.

  • Sorry but I just found that you used 100 epochs for black box capture. Usually at least 10k-100k epochs are used to make a good quality of ANN captures. Thus, it has limitations with Google colab. I recommend comparison using a high Epoch number when capturing with ANN. Thanks.

  • Thanks for the good analysis. I am impressed. I have black box too. Could you let me know how many epochs you set for the capturing with Black Box ANN modelling. Because the sound similarity to real amp depends on the many parameters such as the number of epochs and batch size etc.. With ANN you can set to more than 100K epochs and it can give you very low loss value which is sometimes higher than 99.5% identity with real amp. Actually ANN learning speed is 20 times faster than NAM due to less parameters performed in every epoch of ANN learning. I am sure that in other capture test with tonex, ANN could perform better with a very high Epoch number. In next comparison test, I recommend testing with higher epochs (50k-100k). In tonex, it is not possible to set the epoch number. Therefore, IMHO it is not easy to compare or rank those two with different epoch number settings. Nevertheless, ESR loss value and null test (phase inversion test) may give us some information. Below is the link where you can find lots of good Captures and IRs for black box. The built-in IRs of black box is very bad. I hope this will help. Thanks. https://www.mule.co.kr/m/guide/63185935

  • I bought a Blackbox recently and I found this test you did very interesting.

Would SincoAnn's new AM3 capture method give a better result for Blackbox compared to Tonex?

    Take a test!

  • Excellent video! Thanks for sharing all this science! I've been torn awhile on getting a black box. Now that the Google collab is broken I will hold off because my windows machine won't cut it. Great info and comparison ????
