I just want to say that with this 20W I easily can keep up with the drummer in volume and I am still far from turning the volume to full. Of course it is not enough on a big stage, but there the PA must be responsible for the loudness.
Your cat is super cool and cute????
I tried the DSL and didn't like it! After checking on the prices they were so low I thought maybe others felt the same way! I mean why would they be so cheap? Now they have finally rose in price!
Lol no.
it sounds so thin…
Love your guitar reviews, glad to see a demo of this head i am contemplating. unfortunately, while it can be very good for a very high gain, i am sadened to find out that it actually lacks the Marshall crunch…it has no a kind of OD mode, but its instantly in Distortion, so even if in lower gain, to me, its more like a lower gain distortion instead of reduced overdrive. Its weird, even MG and Valvestates all have a kind of Marshall crunch, its a must, yet this amp is lacking that
The distortion on this thing sounds awful. Doesn’t sound like a real Marshall.
Prices have come way down. This is a good amp and now is less than a Blues Jr., but so is the 40. Go for it. Much more versatile.
How does the 8 ohm compare to the 16 ohm out?
Is this an amp to play at home and still maintain a relatively good sound, or is it immediately too loud, as you start opening the volume knob? The amp doesn't seem to have a master volume, which kind of makes me second guess.
So — serious question here. I'm a relative newb when it comes to guitars. Only been playing for about 16 months — I don't even own an electric guitar (yet). Why would you want a distortion pedal? I mean, with an amp like this, use the Ultra Gain channel (or heck, even that Classic Gain channel can be pretty distorted) crank the hell out of the pre-amp, and you get all the distortion you need, no? I'm just not seeing the need for a distortion pedal at all, with an amp like this. But maybe there's a use-case I'm unaware of?
I've been looking at the DSL20CR… Really leaning towards that one, especially since you can find 'em on sale for about $750 nowadays. That's a hell of a deal. Combine that with maybe a PRS SE Custom 24, and you can have a hell of a good beginner electric-guitar setup for about $1500 — definitely under $2K even with shipping and tax. That really seems like a good start to me…
I've had one for about a year. Its ok. I have a boss ds1 pedal and a mxr 10 band in the fx loop. Not really getting the metal tones I want. I have a Harley Benton v30 horizontal cab, a marshall mx212 vertical and a mesa 2×12 horizontal cab thats best sounding of the three but I use it for my single rectifier head. The Dsl20 is great for classic rock(Skynard, AC/DC ect.) and the clean tones are nice. Honestly where I live I cant turn it up like intended. One day maybe…
Strange. I WAS subscribed to your channel but when I opened this I wasn't anymore. Youtube playing around??
Great lil.amp but does sound thin, think ill go the 100 version
Unplug the ox and lets hear it.
800$? In israel its 370$ new. Jvm205 is 800$
This sounds like ASS????
Hi, I am looking for an amp for my RHCP cover band to gig with, for reversal with the band and alone at home. So the DSL20 sounds as a nice option for dirty cleans
if 20watt is enough for dirty cleansbut I wonder if the Origin20 or the mini silver jubilee would be a better option to go for? What do you think. Now I use a mustang III V2 as my swiss army knive that brings me quite far in the tones I need. Would a 20 watt tube Marshall with pedals and a 4×12 cabinet be a good upgrade?Did you try using the HRX 1×12 cab with the DSL20? Would like to know as that would be my setup, many thanks
Can you use headphones with this? I’m assuming this doesn’t have an effects loop?
Sorry if I missed this – for these playing demos did you use the recording out? Or are you miking up a cab? Thanks
This or the origin 20?
After a week's honeymoon time with my new DSL20hr, I am in love. It's not a perfect amp, but for what it does, it's a little beast.
I am running mine through an HB vertical 2×12 with V30's. It's a pretty good match for those that like V30 tone. It takes about 10 seconds to dial in a classic thrash tone with added bottom end. It has a very aggressive bottom end. No problems there.
I will say this about volume. I have my DSL20hr sitting right next to a PRS MT15, which is also sitting on a V30 loaded 2×12. The MT15 is much louder than the DSL at the same spot on the volume knob. At 1/4 volume, the DSL20hr is almost at small gig volume. At 1/4 volume, the MT15 is stupidly painfully loud. I don't know if the DSL20hr ever gets as loud as the MT15. That little amp is a freak of nature.
I just got it yesterday. It is such a satisfying amp. I play a mix of indie, rock & metal and it does it all. It's so easy to dial in and I can't stop playing my guitar as a result. It's all I do anymore.
My dsl20hr is brand new
But the ribavs don't work
are you normal?
I have the dsl20, the evh 5150-3 lbxs, and the friedman runt 20. I think the dsl isn't just a good amp for the price, its one of the best sounding 20 watt amps on the market. The price is just a bonus. I keep buying other 20 watt amps and I always end up being disappointed and going back to the dsl20.
I have a DSL20CR combo and I'm very happy with it. Just changed the speaker to Celestion G12H 70th anniversary and preamp tubes, the amp just came alive! Mainly using the green channel for edge of breakup clean tone and pedals to get overdrive and distortion. It is a very versatile and budget-friendly amp, loud too!
My settings are in the green channel -> Gain 6 Volume 4 Treble 3 Middle 10 Bass 4 Presence 4 Resonance 1. If you want to crank it to get plexi-style distortion sounds with tight bottom end, turn off the resonance. It just makes the bottom end wobblier and looser.
Is this same as DSL JCM 2000 series ,, Just smaller and Chinese built with USB access????????????
BUTT BOI!!
I just bought a 20 watt head and gonna run it through a Harley Benton cab with a celestion vintage 30
Could this amp support gigs?
You ain’t playing a Dsl20 in an apartment without being evicted. This is not a bedroom amp. To get the amp to actually open up and fill out the volume is gonna be louder than really practical for a bedroom/couch amp. With an attenuator maybe, but by then it’s not exactly a sub 1000 dollar amp. It’s a great amp but don’t get it twisted 20watts and even halved is plenty enough to piss off your neighbors and anoy the wife. I think people think this as an amp you can gig with and use it at home. Yeah you can gig with it, but I don’t think it’s practical for most for around the house. Sorry I love my DSL20cr but it’s loud enough I can only play it when I got the house to myself. The headphone out sounds terrible in my opinion, but some people swear they use it. However the Dsl20 is one of the few “lunchbox”
Amps that have big bottles in it and that makes a big difference it makes el84 boogies sound like toys side by side for high gain stuff at least. I think it’s the best 20 watt tube amp around for the sound and value especially since I got mine a couple years ago when they were even cheaper. I just disagree that it’s a good “practice “ amp for most it’s way too much volume for around the house.
Straight out of the box… before I plugged in a guitar, volume completely off….shhhhhhhhishing sound in my speakers.. turn up the volume and it disappeared…..
Channel switching. No probs clean to dirty but …dirty back to clean…..loud pop ????,
Excessive heating up after 10 mins,
Input jack felt like no clicking in,
Foot switch buttons wobbly like some cheap arse pedal omg ????
When I switched her off even louder pop like a 30 year old solid state amp.
… ENOUGH, A new amp ha, back in the box, returned the next day…paid the extra $600 and bought a UK made jcm800.
Heaven Found at last.
Lessons learnt….U get what U pay for, Vietnam made junk.
Now only $699 for the head. Even more reason to pull the trigger.
I returned mine after a week. So much bass, also very problematic with their wiring, something about how they wire the reverbe into the lead channel, also cheap pots. Pretty sure one of the preamp tubes went after like an hour of playing. I dunno I thought this thing was pretty crappy
I agree John, that tele through that amp sounds great!
I went for the DSL20 combo and with the ad talk about it being only 20W and fitted with a Celestion seventy 80, made it perfect for home playing, don’t believe a word of it if you want to hear gain then you’ll need to soundproof your room.
I bought the dsl40 a few months ago. The amp blew me away. Best clean tone on a Marshall I’ve ever heard. Plexi to jcm tones are all there too.
I have a EVH LBXII. It sounds great, but I'm wanting a cleaner tone at a louder volume. The EVH breaks up almost instantly. Does the Marshall dsl 20 break up pretty fast on the clean channel? The EVH is 15 watts, and honestly louder than I would probably ever need, so that makes me think the 20 watts would be enough, unless it gets distortion right away. So then I'd need to go to 40 watts. But the combo is 50 lbs! And I'm thinking about playing at church with seating for 300-400. (I'd love to Rock the church, ???????? but I don't see that happening). What are your thoughts? I really value your opinion. Thanks.
Awesome demo! Thanks!????????
I've heard good things about this amp, as well as the Origin. I'm surprised how little this costs, considering how great everyone says it sounds over the Origin series. I was looking into both of them, as well as the Bugera infinium 22 watt head. Now, I'm leaning towards the Quilter SuperBlock UK 25 watt. For the money and my purposes, it will probably be the best option.
Nice one, as always, John and Zach. I'm interested to see more amplifier reviews in the future.
I just bought the Origin 50 head and two "12 speaker cabinet. It's pretty damn nice! Why is my translucent cherry Classic Les Paul on your wall? Lol
