I bought a Sheriff 25 based on this video.
Absolutely phenomenal!
They failed to get the Marshall amps' Volume knobs past 1 or 2 o'clock which is where they get beefy, compress and sound proper. The power amps do the work on those, but they need to be pushed. Sad to see from guys that should know this stuff.
I don't thiink the original Marshall amp tone that defined the distorted amp craze has ever been formally and publically identified. Now, Marshall and every clone maker has copied and used the same several circuit designs underneath the distorted amp craze. And I would argue that even the great Jose Aridondo Marshall mods have to be circuit changes that can be identified and documented. Obviously then, there is something else going on in the case of those classic Marshalls. Thus it can only be the selection of the particular components and speakers used that defines the trick. So the question should become, which components in a plexi make it perform as the real deal plexi, and which brands of clones use those particular components? And those brands that might do that should also include Marshall themselves. After all, the joke has nearly been omnipresent since the 1960's: why do people want something that sounds like a hot-rodded, blazing Marshall when you can abandon that thinking and just go buy an actual vintage Marshall !!! People treat amp designs like it is rocket science but Christ, it just should not be that complicated. It's a crazy observation, but even Marshall is in the busineess of copying a Marshall.
I have to comment…….
I worked in one of the top recording studios in the world in the 80’s……
I can’t remember a single time I saw an artist use a modded vs stock Marshall amp.
They may have used one live?
But I recorded with Elliot Randall, Peter Frampton, The Rolling Stones, The Ramones, Billy Joel, Scandal, The Outlaws, Freddie Salem, Graham Goldman, Quincy Jones, Humble Pie etc etc and they all used stock Marshall amps.
A V30 is one of the last speakers I would want to use with this kind of sound. Too much spike in the upper mids.
Good vid nonetheless. All the amps still sound great, you kind of pick which one has the feature set you need.
Open up a Studio series Marshall and an Origin series and you won’t see any major difference in construction though.
Great amps – but be aware that if you're in North America – Victory support is optional, in other words – none existent.
Dave is wild for these names lmao
The pt has no bottom end.
I think the pink taco sounds best
What is on Pete’s pedal board?
Marshall JCM 800 + Boss DS-1 = That 80's Tone
Friedman ALL THE WAY ! ! !
The Friedman captures more of an organic slightly golden toned distortion. To me the marshals sound clanky with less tonal color. The victory falls between the two camps.
Friedmans and the Victory sounded awesome. The pink taco had a bit of a midrange bump compared to the Little Sister. Both were awesome.
The Marshalls all the way
It's called a water biscuit because you need a glass of water to choke it down.
pete is a damned good guitar player.
LITTLE SISTER And PINK TACO SOUNDED TOPS !!! Super awesome episode…..very important shootout indeed!!
SV20 for the win.
Tchube Screamah! Thanks, guys. Great vid as always.
Love your guys’ videos, but watching Lee tweak an amp can be maddening ???? The Marshalls especially need to be up past 7-8 before they really start to open up. It gets good for half a second and then it seems he has a compulsion to immediately return all knobs to the 12 o clock position. I can see Pete urging for some of the same tweaks I’m wanting him to make as well. I wish they’d use their ears and try and match the amps a bit more for a fair comparison. A lot of amps are one trick pony’s and rather than try and fight it or pull clean tones out, just crank it and let it rip.
Pink Taco V1 all day every day!!!!
they all sound bad
I truly think the JJ Junior 20 Friedman would’ve been a good choice to put in this blend. It has a much tighter base response as well but also a great clean channel and I think it’s probably the most versatile I’ve been running a sheriff 22 which I like a great deal but I’m not impressed the sheriff 25 as far as I don’t want those super high game tones I like having them available, but since I don’t use them regularly, I enjoy the clean channel on the 22 and the 44 and I guess that’s why I also picked up one of the JJ 20 white heads and I also recently got killed my credit card lol the JEL so it has a great out of the box, Marshall tone and certainly the modded 800 either way all fantastic amps I just think the JJ Junior would’ve been a good mix 35:26 35:32
Dave Freidman makes amazing amps, and he's a great guy. If I didn't buikd my own amps , I'd certainly prefer spending money on one of his before I'd buy the poorly made pcb marshall.
A no brainer
Don’t let the captain dial in your tones… maybe the worst eq manipulation I’ve ever seen
Damn you two,
I’m just going to have to buy all five!
Practice
Victory is Most Tasty Sound Amp in this comparison!
The Pink Taco gain structure is a 3 way switch I dont think they explored all 3 settings in this video just the high gain. There is a lower gain setting which takes you more into the vintage Marshall gain territory, it is certainly more hot rodden JCM800 in style but on the lower setting you can back the gain off and go for a more vintage type of sound.
Improve your way to record, your sound is garbage on every amps tested….
For the perfect Classic Rock sound, the SV20 with all controls at noon sounds amazing.
Buy a mesa, then use a pedal for marshall sounds.
What camera are you using it looks great?
