Martin 000 Battle For The Ages! Martin 000-18 VS. Martin 000-28

In a shock, we have never filmed this comparison before. Two of Martin’s most well known and respected models, the Martin 000-18 and the Martin 000-28 have graced countless stages and recordings over the years. Similar in build with aesthetics and tonewoods on the back and sides making the difference this comparison is as much a demonstration of tonewood as it is a battle between these two legends. Which one will you prefer?

  • I was deciding between a 000-18 and 000-28 in May and went with the 000-18 for the sound, despite thinking I preferred the aesthetic of the 000-28. Now I think there's an unstated beauty and pureness to the look of the 000-18. When I see the 000-28 now, it is not as appealing to me.

  • how about n-o-o-o, as in "Nooo."
too $$$, stuff falls apart, humidity nightmare etc.
    buy 3 rando acoustics instead

good podcast anyhow, thank u Alamo and Chris n' Coop

  • Amazing video. A 000-16 streetmaster compared to the 000-28 would be really interesting

  • I've owned a Martin and Guild mahogany and a Gibson and Taylor and Washburn rosewood, I seem to always find myself reaching for the mahogany guitars while wondering what am I missing with the rosewoods, since the consensus seems to prefer it. Truth is, play what you are drawn to, for me it's mahogany.

  • Mahogany for me. Always felt it to be ‘honest’. Both are incredible. I ordered a 0000-18 (M-18) from Martin Custom Shop; 10-12 month build time, almost 5 months in…. So stoked!

  • Watch you guys a bunch. Great videos. Question for you. I’m looking for a budget friendly comp guitar to the Martin OMJM. OOO/OM body, 25.4 scale, 1 11/16 nut, Sitka top, Sapale/Mahogany sides. Price range $1,000 – $1,500. Is there any Martin out there like this?

  • 000-18 for me. I've owned a few. Currently a custom Shop 000-18 with Adirondack/Sinker Mahogany, golden era bracing. This is Mahogany Heaven !! Thanks again for a great video.

  • 000-18 with herringbone and maple binding as Chris suggested would be awesome! It will really make the guitar pop a little

  • Both have great sound and I hate to be a rosewood sheep but I liked the tone of the 000-28 better. It spoke to me.

  • I really wish Martin used 1/4" bracing in the 000-28, too. I think it would make a big difference.

  • Ok Chris McKee and Coooper Greenberg it's Phil Martin aka Cornbread, aka Doc Martin, aka Dr.Martin THE luthier king and I would like to pass on some info on some incredible guitars. The Alvarez Masterworks series will amaze you with the sound, playabillity and features.I have purchased 4 of these so far the MDR70e 12 fret,MD60BG,MD70BG and most resent the MF60OM.Chris mentioned wanting the 000 hog body with upgrade features and the Alvarez MF60OM is it! The MF60OM has a AAA Sitka top that's aged with scalloped bracing, neck binding ,herringbone rosette and top inlay, grained ivroid binding, bone nut and saddle,24 13/16" scale,1-3/4" nut, solid mahogany backsides and neck with a soft V profile and open gear tuners with a nice soft/hard case for $799!

  • I have a 000M and love it. I have a OM35 and they are also really nice. The emporium in Lexington has a Marting wall, Taylor, and bunch that cost more than my car. 30 minute drive from Rhode Island.

  • Gentlemen!

I live in Denmark. I will likely never have an occasion to do business with your store. However, I watch your videos and enjoy them thouroughly. Listen to the podcast as well. Thanks for all you do.

    All the best

  • Martin is a great guitars made but more 200 year they need to re-designed out side for more better look as Taylor made .the sound of Martin guitar is so goods

  • Ha! We have no Martin walls in Rhode Island! A few cool shops though.
I chose the 000-18 and it never fails to impress me- so articulate, warm, forgiving, and easy to play!. What a gem. Great video and amazing playing.

  • I went to buy a HD35, then recalled how much I was impressed by the 000-18 at another store. So I played a 000-18 and loved it. I had to try the 000-28 many times, thinking I’d like it more but for me it wasn’t even close. The 000-18 was for me. Now it was a matter of which of the 2 new 000-18’s in stock I pick. I walked out with both the HD35 and one of the 000-18. It was a great guitar day, and my wife in the car said good for you ????

  • In 2012, my favorite guitar store let me compare a 000-18 and 000-28 for an hour or so. My wife would alternately hand me one to play, blindfolded, and I walked out with the 28. The 18 just sounded muffled to both of us while the 28 rang and sounded so clear. Today, it would not be as easy to choose.

  • I walked away with the D-18! Just felt ready to be mine! The 28 just didn’t sound as well, maybe it was just that guitar! But I LOVE my 18!

  • I’m upset you did this video. About 6 years ago I sold my 00018 after being convinced I needed rosewood. I sold the 18 , purchased the 28 and was just getting over the loss of the 18 until I saw this video. Now I’ve got to be depressed all over again.

Seriously, thanks for the video. I have learned I’m a mahogany guy more than rosewood, although I purchased the 00016 Streetmaster recently.

    Thank you again.

  • African Mahogany is a great tonewood that does a nice job. I have an Alvarez AD66SHB that is all mahogany, and the sound is quite focused.

  • The tone difference is striking. If you had the same pickup in both guitars, would you hear as much difference plugged in? And still have the midrange scoop in the rosewood? Just curious.

  • Great video and comparison. Wouldn't mind seeing a video comparing the 000-28 to the 000-28EC.

And for the love of God, people, please resist the urge to respond to this comment with "The only differences between the 000-28 and 000-28EC are BlaH bLaH bLAh." I don't understand the chemical reactions in your brains that cause you to type shit like that. Thanks!

  • I happen to be the lucky owner of the very best sounding 000-18 on the face of this planet (I know, don’t look any further, I have it, it’s mine!), but I would have no problem owning a good 000-28 as well. ????????????
