Martin Grand J-16e 12-String Demo and Review

Today we’re taking a look at the new Jumbo 12-String from Martin, the Grand J-16e. With a jumbo sized body and 000 depth, this guitar is deceptively comfortable while still preserving all the grandiose tone of a massive 12-String. Take a look and a listen and let us know what you think!

  • Hey guys. I am having a concern about the J16. I have been playing on it for about two months now. I love the sound and the electro acoustic system is amazing, but it has no projection. It’s a very low decibel guitare. Every time I jam with people it’s difficult to hear the guitare cause the volume is so low. Does Anybody has the same experience. ? Thank you

  • Line them up so we can compare: Eastman AC 630, Guild F 55, a Taylor 12, Gibson J 185, and then play that. Which one actually sounds better? Thank you!

  • Great guitarists hide defects in design, tone, and harmonics. I just want to hear the guitar. While the songs are great, from the first fret to the last I want to hear scales, slowly … very slowly so I can actually hear it. A great guitarist can make a can with a string in it sound good.

  • I'm not really a twelve string guy…mostly because I don't like wrestling with a guitar to get the sounds out I need. However, after watching you play this instrument, listening to the description and hearing the great tones that came out of this relatively affordable guitar, I am absolutely sold and I am going to purchase this model sometime in the near future (and hide it from the wife LOL). In truth, I love triple O guitars so this 12 string version is a no brainer. One last thing…
I have many Taylors, and I honestly love them all but IMO the Hotel California tone in this 12 string guitar has got them beat for 60's and 70's style music. Just my 2 cents worth. Peace.

  • It's great how you addressed the Taylor GA shape.
This 12 sounds more familiar for a reason.
Even my Martin DX1 sounds nice and full after all these years.
Great demo and wonderful playing Thanks

  • Thanks for the in depth video. I finally decided to order one a couple weeks ago and have been very pleased with it. It is set up great for playability, plenty of big volume, and articulate.

  • Big body (Martin) vs. small body (Taylor) 12 string analogy: who ever said, “my car has too much horsepower”…

  • As soon as they have one in stock I'm heading to San Antonio to pick one of these up.

  • I played one of these a couple of days ago when auditioning some acoustics. It is a fantastic guitar with a superb low action, and great playability. I was totally smitten with it, but I had gone into the store to buy a 6 string that I could walk around with and play outdoors. So this guitar didn’t exactly meet my brief, but,boy I was sorely tempted. I ended up buying a Martin D-X2E, and also picked up an Ovation 12 to cure
my itch for a 12 stringer. Hearing you play this instrument is bringing it all back to me. I may just have to buy one of these a year or two down the line. Nice review, and brilliant playing. Thank you.

  • Holy cow, what tone and fantastic playing, Cooper. The 000 depth reminds me of the mini-jumbos Seagull used to make, which were jumbo shaped, slightly bigger than a dreadnought but with a slim body.

  • I like it. It doesn't have that bass boom that typical (Martin) Dreadnought /Jumbos have. But what I really want is a Martin OM-12 with a traditional-size OM body.

  • Just bought mine yesterday at L&M in Canada. Thank you Cooper for your review which made me aware of this beautiful guitar to try out. ????
