Matt Freeman – Interview with Mike Dirnt of Green Day
Matt Freeman – Interview with Mike Dirnt of Green Day
Got the opportunity to interview my old friend Mike Dirnt, bass player of Green Day, the other day while we played at Oracle Park in San Francisco on The Saviors Tour. Mike goes through his Gibson Grabber bass that he brought out on this tour and tells us a little bit about it.

I feel like most great bass and guitar players just can't part with that one guitar no matter how many miles on it ????????????!
Two legends being humble, awesome humans. Thanks for all the continued great music!
Fantastic Interview, Matt! Very informative and great history information. I would love to see you do more interviews, like with Karl Alvarez or Jay Bentley. Keep up with the amazing work that you do! ????
For a man with large hands, Mike Dirnt has very small fingernails :/
There's still one Eastbay bassist Pete Rypin's. I've had the honor of playing in bands with both Mike Dirnt (frustrations) and Pete Rypin's (tantrums). Both amazing people.
I really appreciate you Matt Freeman.
OG East Bay punks talking bass guitars, I fucking love it.
The bassist in Drug Church has been using one for touring this year and that's pretty cool
Very cool vid
dope
I love both of you guys so much. You introduced me to punk music and now I get to blast my students ears off whenever I put music in class.
I was there at Oracle park! Y'all killed it!
Thanks for letting us in on this awesome conversation Matt!! You guys have great synergy!
I primarily like Fender guitars and basses; they fit the hand well and have a classic sound. However, the Gibson Grabber, Gibson Ripper, and Gibson RD are the best bass guitars when it comes to special exclusive sound. This is something that Kenny Vasoli, the singer from The Starting Line, would agree with. Mark Hoppus should ditch the Jaguar Bass and get a G3. (joke) Greetings from the Czech Republic.
I have that same badass 2 bridge on my Jazz Bass! This is great Matt
Thank you both, Matt and Mike! From one bassguy to two of punk's most prominent!
I always wanted a g3 because I saw Mike playing one. I finally got one last year!
I love all the gaffer's tape! lol
What a lame
sngat ter hibur ke 2 basis yang saya idolakan akan tetapi mike permainannya lincah
My high school band opened up for Green Day on 4/26/91 in Soiux Falls (there's a great video of the show on Youtube). Our bassist (Randy Geraghty) had a Gibson Grabber and I'm almost certain that Mike bought his bass at that show. I remember the story of Mike's bass being broken and Sioux Falls would have come before Mpls on the tour. You can see Randy on the video up front (in a striped shirt and backwards hat) at around the 10:00 mark talking to Mike who is playing the Grabber.
Great interview! Matty should do more interviews with punk bass players for the Bass Bunker channel!
Os donos da bola precisando de comentarista
Veloso:
Maybe someone said it earlier in the comments, but Ray Ahn from the Hard-Ons had/has the same Gibson Grabber bass!
First time I saw Kiss, 19?? … Gene was playing a Ripper, through guess what, two Marshall stacks…
Love the video at Pinole High School where Mike literally throws this bass on the ground lol
Had a sweet moment with Mike when I saw Green Say for the very first time and first concert at wembley June 29th I shouted his name I was right up front too the right he must of heard me and another fan he stopped right in front of me I had a guitar plectrum I tried throwing to him for him to have and keep but he didn't catch it he tried looking a little but couldn't see it so low me a kiss was such a sweet moment and then Billie taking my pride flag on stage for my mate Clarke who was part of the pride community and he sadly took his life in Dec 2021 moment meant the fuckin world too me ❤
I’ve waited for years to see a video where Mike talks about his old G3. He’s the reason I play them and both of you guys are huge influences on my playing.
Is Mike wearing a Charger t shirt that’s rad . Matt I dig the sound of charger cool side group !
