MISSION ACCOMPLISHED? Mission 778X Amplifier Review

The Mission 778X is almost identical to another IAG amplifier, the Quad Vena 2, but it’s cheaper. It is less money than their Audiolab 6000A too. Could it be the bargain in the IAG portfolio?

  • Hi Tarun, based on your reviews I've gone with the Quad Vena II Play and the Acoustic Energy AE300 to add that mid range warmth and easy listening. They suit all types of music and I'm really pleased with the result, love the reviews. Chris

  • I'm looking for a sub £750 amp to replace an ancient NAD 3020e to pair with my B&W 606 S2s and a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo. A Yamaha MX-10 streamer handles the digital stuff and 30 year old Sony CD player is around. The Mission 778X would seem to be a good choice but how would it handle the B&Ws?

  • Would this be suitable to run a single Technics SL1210 MK5 Turntable with some mission bookshelf speakers ? Also will the amp accommodate banana plugs ?

  • I totally agree on HDMI Earc. I am perfectly happy with two channel with my TV and would appreciate having the single remote to adjust everything and simplify connection. I have the sister Quad Vena and it is my only gripe.

  • Hi Tardun, firstly love your channel. This amp really grabs my attention. I run Dynaudio Emit 20,s with my 35 year old 50w Rotel amp and a smsl dac running bluetooth. My question. Would updating to the 778x give me a significantly better sound or am I just setting a low bar? Would I get enough punch with this amp or should I be saving up for a better amp. Would getting a streamer and putting it through the onboard 778x dac be a good match for my more budget system? Cheers Jon

  • Can anyone advise setting up a USB connection between my new 778x and Mac? … I am not an audiophile… far from it.

  • Hi Tarun , I am looking for a small headphone amp with pre out and a remote control to use for occasional headphone listening and incorporating a turntable into my main rig . I wonder did you test this unit as a pre amp only ? Try the headphone output ? And do you know whether the analogue inputs remain in the analogue domain or whether they are digitised ? Many thanks !

  • Hi Tarun, hope you can review the Keces E40 integrated amp & the Galion TS A75. Keces is a Taiwanese brand.

  • Excellent review. Seems identical to the Vena2, including the digital outputs which I find useful (infact they were a deciding factor in getting the Quad). Same form factor and quoted power output as well. Wonder where the extra ~£150 has gone with the Vena2? Your thoughts are similar to mine with the sound of the Mission Vs the Quad. Very decent and stable power supply is able to handle tough speaker loads far bettter than you'd expect. Cheers.

  • From transistors and capacitors to sound quality and connectivity review, always a thorough presentation. My answer to what I would like to see from British hi-fi like Mission, Rega and Naim is a brilliantly built and superb sounding 80-100w integrated amplifier w/out a built-in DAC, include only 5 inputs, a volume control, a dedicated external phono stage for MM and MC and a dedicated power supply, and then I will do business. Answer might after-all be NAIM?

  • Just returned an Cambridge Audio AXA35, great amp just not enough poke! 45w would be a keep but not 35w running the amp at 75% for average day listening, asking for a short life! Bought a Nad C316bee V2 teamed it with a pair of Wharfedale 12.2 and a very cheap Fiio KA11 dongle dac from the PC and POW! Very clean sound, plenty of poke and not even past 11.00 o'clock on the volume, thankyou Nad! Clean forward vocals (love that) bags of bass and well enough controlled and appropriate highs. At £299 for this amp and the power its a no brainer, it maybe the poor mans Pony but it works harder for longer!

  • Hello Tarun. Thank you for another excellent review. I recently bought a new amplifier, the Advance Paris A 12 Classic, and I am extremely satisfied with it. I don't know if this brand is distributed in the UK, but if you have the opportunity, it's worth checking out.

  • I had a mission cyrus 2 +PSX, I traded it for for a 2 box audilab8000 amp and have never regretted it

  • Tarun ,have you considered doing a review of the Made in Germany amps from SPL , Stereo Performance Labs .
they are not well known in the hi fi world as they are mostly known for supplying high quality
gear for professional recording studios .
Also have you considered doing a review on the Norwegian speakers , Arendal ? Thanks

  • Even if I already have all that I need or can afford for the moment in term of Hi-Fi, it’s always a pleasure to watch and learn something more from your reviews.

  • This one is tempting due to the usb-c connection for playing from my PC. The 'might be too cool for KEFs" comment slowed me down a bit. Is there something in a similar price range with a usb connection that plays a little warmer? Thanks for the great reviews ????

  • Always insightful and well thought out reviews. Totally envious that you have access to so much great gear!
My system, so far: Cambridge AXR85 and wouldn't change it for the world. Combined with a pair of ELAC Debut 2.0 B5.2 & an ELAC Debut 2.0 10" Powered Subwoofer. Just got a vintage Denon SACD/Blu-Ray player. Sooo happy… until the next splurge hits me.

  • Great looking amplifier! Recently in a high end audio store. Salesman mentioned Mission loudspeakers as one of his favorites back in the day. There appearances way too shouty for me and my decor. Lol.
