  • Your tone sucks beginners! Says this guy RB with a 5k PRS and boutique amps.
Been playing guitar since 98 yes my tone sucked back then but it was mostly because I wanted to sound like Korn and Limp Bizkit and my cheap Ibanez floyd would not stay in tune.
Now my tone still sucks and I still play with cheap amps and modelers, but at least my taste in music is better….I think.

  • Beginners tone stinks because of two things. Ignorance and experience. They are ignorant to what effects do, how to use them, and how much of it to use. They also arent experienced enough to play the songs correctly, feel the notes correctly, and use the most important aspect; your hands.

  • I think when beginners focus on tone, it is because they are focusing on the wrong things. They want to "sound like the album" and lose focus on "playing the same notes as on the album". I have a Yamaha THR30ii. It is just a living room amp. It has reverb, delay, and a phaser/flanger/chorus. I use that for playing everything from Master of Puppets by Metallica to "Its a Sin to be Rich" by Lighnin Hopkins to… "A bar Song" by Shaboozey. I have three setting I use for almost everything. A high gain distortion, a clean with light effects, and a semi-clean that is just on the edge of overdriving. I play light and its clean. I play hard and heavy and its really dirty. I plug in my Donner Jazz or Schecter Omen and that's it. And truth be told, I use the Donner Jazz more because it has dual humbuckers with a split coil toggle switch. I can get a half dozen tones just from flipping knobs and switches on it. And I can get a decent tone for : country, blues, ragtime, jazz, metal…

Tone is always a lonely second fiddle to playing the right notes on beat. Then again, truth be told, I never heard someone's tone and was like "Wow! That blows my mind!"
