My Top 10 Guitarists : Who Would You Choose?
I rank my personal top 10 guitarists of all time and how they’ve influenced my life, which albums you should start with
This started as my top 20 guitarists from the UK and another top 20 guitarists from the USA. I soon realised this was impossible to do without it taking hours of filming and multiple episodes.
I felt it was better to try and to my top 10 and then perhaps do another in the series. Even now I am not sure if one these choices should be in my top 10!.

From the 80's Johnny Marr, Stuart Adamson, The Edge, Billy Duffy and Steve Rothery who had their own tone, sound and style, cheers.
Its funny how Blackmore, Page, Beck, Clapton, May, Richards, Kossov, Townshend and Green all came from roughly the same area of suburban London, something to do with the Ealing Club i think
Ritchie Blackmore is easily the GOAT… The Man in Black invented shredding and fused neo classical with hard rock. Not just one great band, but two. Blackmore forever ???? ???? ????
Phill Exelente eleccion PARA MI RITCHIE BLACKMORE ES LÁ CABRA ,FUE EL MAYOR INFLUENCIADOR DEL HEAVY O HARD DE TODOS LOS GUITARRISTAS QUE VINIERON DESPUES ,VELOCIDADE,HARMONIA ,RITMO ,SOLOS INCREIBLES SIN TANTA DISTORCION, E HIZO LOS MEJORES RIFFS DE LA HISTORIA
There's No such thing as the Best guitarist in the world there Just Music Now for you none believers if there was you would have to go By the body of work licks in songs weather studio Recorded or Live version .
Oh dear , this is a tough one . I guess everyone's choice is the best top 10 , everyone has their own fave guitarists so everyone's top ten is valid .
Well , here it goes, this is my top 10 ..
10 – Martin Barre Jethro Tull Songs from the Wood
9 – Rory Gallagher Top Priority
8 – Adrian Smith Iron Maiden Piece of Mind
7 – Tony Iommi Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell
6 – Steve Howe Yes Fragile
5 – Eddie Van Halen Van Halen Van Halen 1978
4 – Angus Young AC DC Back in Black
3 – Richie Blackmore Deep Purple Machine Head
2 – Joe satriani The Extremist
1 Michael Schenker UFO No Heavy Pettin
Nice list, Phil, much for me to explore. My two most played are Neil Young and Steve Hackett. I discovered both c.76, aged 16. Both write for the song: Neil is all about feeling, and Steve can go from transcendent to terrifying. Both are unique, immediately recognisable, and have the added bonus of playing both electric and acoustic guitar.
Here are some of my top guitarists: Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Gary Moore, Mark Knopfler …
Thumbs up for choosing Fair Warning here !!!
Totally agree on what you've said about Beck, he was so versatile!
Absolutely brilliant list ! My top 10 best guitarists ever would be:
1. Jeff Beck
(The Governor. To Jeff guitar playing wasn’t about technique, it was about sound. I was privileged to see him in concert twice. The best ever.)
2. Django Reinhardt
(The greatest jazz player ever to have lived)
3. Scotty Moore
(No-one could play the guitar like this lad !)
4. Ritchie Blackmore
The man who brought neo-classical rock to life. Gifted)
5. Kaki King
(Unique jazz fusion & innovator)
6. Steve Howe
(Technically brilliant at everything)
7. B.B. King
(Blues man who could make a guitar weep)
8. John Williams
(Best classical guitarist I’ve ever heard)
9. John Dowland
(well a lute is a type of guitar !)
10. Bernie Torme
(Unique and so gifted)
Any top 10 guitarist list will omit some brilliant and hugely influential players. These lists often don't appear to consider how much of a void the absence of a certain player might create. Holdsworth, Zappa, McLaughlin, Fripp, Rypdal, Hendrix and Torn were arguably quite a bit more groundbreaking and influential than several of the players listed in this video.
Here's a name that is missing in the comments and I would definitely have in my top 10 : NILS LOFGREN is a fantastic guitarist that is always criminally ignored. Another great that nobody talks about is: TIM RENWICK. Even MARC BOLAN should be in this conversation. RITCHIE BLACKMORE is my number 3. MICHAEL SCHENKER is in second place but for me there's a clear number 1 and that's the incomparable genius: RORY GALLAGHER.
1. Ritchie Blackmore
2. David Gilmour
3. Ulrich Roth
4. Donald Roeser "Buck Dharma"
5. Brian Robertson
6. Bernie Tormé
7. Jeff Beck
8. Steve Morse
9. Rory Gallagher
10. Michael Schenker
Great show! All day yesterday I listened to the Tommy Bolton Album Teaser…. Wow what an awesome album … thank you for turning me on to this!
I enjoyed your selections sir and have enjoyed the playing of these artists. Your list was heartfelt and personal. You expressed your feelings nicely. The only artist I’ve seen live and he was with Scorpions was Schenker. Fantastic show in a small auditorium in Germany many moons ago. Thank you.
In no certain order…
John McLaughlin
John Abercrombie
Carlos Santana
J Mascis
Thurston Moore
John Sykes
Tony Iommi
Bill Connors
Brian Robertson
Eddie Van Halen
No Rory Gallagher?
1) Joe Satriani 2) John Petrucci 3) Alex Lifeson 4) Tony Iommi 5) Jorn Viggo Lofstad (Pagan's Mind) 6) EVH 7) Terry Kath 8) Michael Schenker 9) Steve Vai 10) Vivian Campbell (with Dio)
Frank Zappa is the greatest
Just caught up with this video Phil – really interesting and quite intriguing. Who do I listen to the most?
1. Pete Townshend – because I love The Who and although he’s no lead guitar wizard his use of chord structures and how he plays power chords does it for me.
2. Jeff Beck – for the same reasons as you… so innovative
3. Paul Kossoff – when I want to lose myself in emotional guitar playing
Yes – I’m of an age where I grew up with these guys. EVH as good as he was came much later so I still don’t listen to him quite as often. …and yes… without Hendrix where would we be?
Great stuff!
Gamma 3!!? I really like gamma 1 and I adore gamma 2 , I found 3 unlistenable ????
Always Ritchie for me at number one, ever since I heard him when I was fifteen. Others, in no particular order: Schenker, SRV, Iommi, Beck, Gilmour, Moore. Certainly other guitarists I love, but none that have moved me quite as much as these.
My top 5 might be Fripp, Barre, Latimer, Bornemann and Blackmore ????
Wow, Leslie West! Your list is the most unique I’ve ever heard. Good on you.
Not in a particular order: Mark Knopfler
Eddie van Halen
Tony Iommi
Yngwie Malmsteen
Jimi Hendrix
Michael Schenker
Geordie Walker
Randy Rhoads
Steve Howe
Richie Blackmore
Great list!
My list!
1. Alex Lifeson
2. Edward Van Halen
3. Neal Schon
4. Stevie Ray Vaughan
5. Brian May
6. Billy Gibbons
7. Jimmy Page
8. David Gilmour
9. Nuno Bettencourt
10. Elliot Easton
Thanks Phil, great list.
