My Two Approaches Writing Music
I mentioned that I did 4 attemps recording this video and not just did I tried the recording. The first videos were basically done editing. I felt the first videos were nothing but confusing and that it wouldn´t get much better after this one. It lacks a bit of structure and ther´re many things I missed saying, but as I´ve said…it´s a complicated thing to put unto words for me. I almost never have to explain what I do on a deeper level, I just do it. I was close deleating this one also, starting a new attempt from scratch, writing everything down to a script before hand, but that´s not really me.
I try to give you an idea of the process when I do those songs and I could go deeper on that topic talking 2 hours straight. I´m sure there will be questions and for everyone out there…feel free to ask. Partly running that channel is about the community and finding my place in a niche outside my studio. Thanks for reading, thanks for watching. I appreciate your time!

I'm in much the same state of mind as you. I'm 50 years old,
no music theory skills and I've been playing for myself, and most of the time without recording, for over 30 years. I play to relax. Which surprises those around me most of the time.
I pick up my guitar, trun on my DAW with some plugins and play.
I still have a bit of trouble writing the drums and bass parts, but watching your videos motivates me to try this kind of experiment.
I'd love to be able to make a rigg with the same pedals as you. The microcosm and the Chase Bliss make me want to, but their price puts a stop to my desire 😉
Still, it's more practical than picking up your mouse and moving pots around.
In any case, thanks for sharing and I continue to watch your videos with great pleasure!
(sorry for my English, but I'm not fluent)
Great video! It was so satisfying to listen at 16:52 when all the parts started to come together with this style of 5th Element OST.
And the second part was top notch as well.
Have you ever thought about your music sessions as some kind of a meditation for you?
Great video! Great songs! Cool getting to know your approach of writing music!
I really enjoyed that, helpful explanations of how you build different types of track. I’m with you on the ‘I don’t know what I’m doing’ vibe!!
Thanks for sharing your workflow and personal perspective on music. And as always, great music!
Great video, picked up a couple of tips for my own playing with pedals. I have a very similar way of working but I use a mpc one plus instead of a daw. I have about the same amount of knowledge of music theory and never felt it limits me, there are plenty of famous musicians who don’t either. If it sounds good it’s good. I actually think knowing a bit more might get in the way, you reach for a note because it sounds good irrespective of whether it is the correct note to play and that’s more interesting. I play in all moods and I find the act of playing allows me to forget whatever is going on and you just focus on the playing. If something good comes out great and if not then great also as I had fun. Changing up gear helps me as well, I just got rid of my microcosm, it sold in a couple of hours on eBay and replaced it with a Strymon Timeline and have a great fun with that and i find it is much more usable than the microcosm and opened up new ideas.
You're not alone. I'm 55 years old and I have been plucking away at strings since age 16. I still do not know what I'm doing. I really enjoyed the video. A great look into your process and it makes me feel better about my current process. Thank you for sharing. I wish I was brave enough to make videos.
It wasn’t boring at all. I’m sure it’s not easy to explain the whole process. As a newie to making my own music, I sincerely appreciate the way you deliver your experience in this video. Thanks!
I have always played by myself in a very similar way, just playing with a boss RC-10 looper with the inbuilt drum tracks. I taught myself how to play and never know what not or what key i'm in or what notes im playing because i never need to. The times few times i have played with other people i have often felt so embarrassed because i feel like i know nothing about music in terms of theory. I'm glad im not the only one !
love the insight !
Thanks for sharing. Questions: a) do you sync your DaW to the looper or the looper to the DAW? b) when you say « empty tracks » do you keep, one running empty for syncing purposes or are both tracks just ready to record? Thanks! Sounding good….
