Neural DSP Morgan vs Tone King amp sim shootout

Tone King vs Morgan amp sim by Neural DSP!
The Tone King Imperial MKII amp sim is Neural DSPs first real step into the classic and vintage guitar tones we all know and love. Now they’ve released the Morgan Amp Suite. Is the Tone King still king?

  • Got Tone King recently and use that for my HipHop/R&B/Neo-Soul productions
Morgan just a tidy tad too crunchy for me!
    Great vid!

  • I watched loads of Neural DSP videos before purchasing one of these little boyz. I only wanted a good solid amp but these pedals also sound phenomenal. The only issue I have with them is that, they don’t seem to be replaceable in the signal chain. I use my pedals in a kind of experimental way: put some time based stuff and phaser upfront, then drive, then compression, then modulation and other time based things. As far as I understand from all the videos, the signal chain is static. It would be much more useful if the signal chain was more dynamic, allowing pedals to move around and also allowing external pedals to join the party between the pedals. If Neural DSP is supposed to be a professional recording and performance suite, this kind of flexibility seems like a must to me if the pedals are gonna be used.

  • I loved the Morgan Suite, didn’t care much for the Tone King. If you are a dad rocker have you ever tried the Marshall Suite from Softube? Probably the best vintage amp sim I’ve heard

  • Im here for the clean sounds and the sparkle from the Morgan amps takes the cake. But I perfer the distortion on the Tone King waaaay more than the Morgan. I thought the 2nd Morgan sounded alright for distortion.

  • I really disagree about the tone king trem. I found that and the reverb unimpressive. In the box I far prefer the arturia spring reverb and soundtoys tremolator. I have princeton reverb and can get much closer to its sound by combining these plugins.

  • I haven’t played through either, but trying to decide which one to get during the Black Friday sale. Leaning towards the Morgan. I use my Fractal for just about everything but would like to have a few clean amps for my new M4 MacBook Pro.

  • Thanks for this! It is indeed hard to pick a favorite. I liked the Tone King for the cleans, the compressed, and the reverb (not to mention that lovely chorus), and the Morgan sounded better for the overdrive and the delay. Both sounded killer!

  • Great presentation on this comparison. Lots of detail here and to the point. A/B comparisons are really well done. I have the Tone King and Plini X but in the end I'm probably gonna grab this one too. For the price it's an insane amount of options of variation. Sometimes I like to multitrack layered guitars using a very paltry guitar collection, and having the amp variation would certainly help with the layering. Subbed and liked. You had me on your first Tone King video!

  • Great comparison! I had a hard time deciding so I opted for both! I have a real life Tone King so that seemed like a no brainer but the Morgan Suite is really awesome too.

  • I'm planning to buy the Morgan because it seems to have the most advanced and impressive cleans and is also capable of some old school heaviness (maybe new school too?)

  • tried the Morgan Amp Suite….liked it more than ToneKing but when I played thru Plini X – I just knew I don't need Morgans – The Cleans and Breakups on Plini are just fantastic ????

  • technically Archetype Cory Wong was the first classic vintage thing that NDSP released. but morgan and tone king are my favourites as well

  • Cool video showcasing the comparisons. I have them both but can hear the differences in your video better than when I'm playing. 🙂 I've been digging the Tone King for a while now. The Morgan is great too and this video shows how Neural has effectively created a diverse set here and we really "need" both!
