  • Hello!
I had to make this decision 2 months ago.
I am "only" a bass player who wants to learn to play guitar too, so I needed a versatile beginner guitar.
    I only knew two things:
    1.: I don't want a stratocaster
2: I needed to choose only one guitar that would sound good in a wide range of musical genres.
Since the sound of the Ibanez beginner guitars for me only fit into metal styles, I quickly realized: I need a LES PAUL 🙂
And since the selection of beginner guitars in my country is quite modest, the options were limited to Epiphone Special, Studio LT and Studio models. Since the EPIPHONE STUDIO has Alnico split humbuckers, both her beautiful tone and versatility of use made it clear she was the one I needed.
I don't regret it, although I only use she through an Eden bassamp and a Darkglass Vintage Microtubes distortion, but both her sound and her versatility of tone inspire me and improve my bass playing technique.

  • My favorite Epiphone is my koa top LP custom. It feels great and looks amazing. I replaced the switch wiring with braided Gavitt wire and installed burstbucker 1 and 2 pickups.

  • Adam jones art. I own lots of guitars, usa models, epiphone, mim, japan, artist signature usa and mimand epi…. my two favorite guitars to play, regardless of price, origin, are my adam jones art…and my ibanez premium, moded with utopia pickups.

  • Well the criteria that you lost all your guitars kind of helps.
If it was a case of getting one to add it might be a different choice, it would most likely be on that is most different than what I have. But if it was starting over again, the Inspired by Gibson Custom.
But I would still want something with P90s as well.

  • Easy Gibson 2020 LP studio.
Second hand market is flooded with them.
They come with solid pickups and hardware and can be had for a good price ????

Besides the usual poorly designed headstock that all Lp's suffer from they are amazing workhorse.
Just make sure you slap on a string butler and be careful you don't snap off the intire headstock and your golden ????

  • Just bought a new 50’s standard. Probucker 1 and 2, long tenon neck, not too heavy, great feel neck. I also have a studio in smokehouse burst which is really nice. But my favorite is the “Greeny” which is absolutely amazing.

  • I am fortunate to have 7 Epiphone Les Pauls. Four (4) from 2012-2013. And Three (3) 2024 Gibson Custom-Inspired – both Alpine White and Ebony LP Custom and the 1959 LP Standard in Ice Tea Burst. They are my Magnificent Seven (M7).????

  • I picked up the Wino a few months ago and it's one of my favorite Les Pauls regardless of manufacturer, I also recently picked up a Gibson Studio Session and it's fantastic as well but my next purchase… still saving will be the Black Beauty of the Epiphone with the Gibson headstock… still might get the white but the black is just sooooo classic. While my Studio Session is a little better than the Wino… it's dang close… dang close and frankly looks more expensive IMHO.

  • For me it would have to be the Greeny Les Paul. I have always been a fan of the Peter Green out-of-phase sound and this model absolutely nails it.

  • I was debating getting the 59 or the Custom, but ultimately went with the 59 because the pickups sound better to me, and I'm extremely extremely happy with how good the guitar plays and sounds. 100% a forever guitar, no regrets whatsoever.

  • I’m a lefty so there’s only like three and I actually put Pro bucker in my Harley Benton. The cheapest one they had wouldn’t trade it for any epiphone

  • Actually i had to make that decision a month ago. I looked all around th internet and came to the conclusion that they are the ones, that I love and I have to have one of these two: Epi LP Inspired by Gibson Custom 1959 Standart and LP Custom. They are both so perfect. The pickups are both absolutly amazing and original Gibsom Humbuckers. The question you got to ask yourself is: Do you like the old classic legendary Les Paul Look (classic, legendary, old, vintage) or do you like a modern finish (white, gold, expensive, modern). With the white LP Custom you are the king of the stage. With the legendary 1959 Look, everyone knows your guitar and i dont know a single person who doesn‘t like the factory burst finish an a les paul. So: modern or classic. Whatever you like, that is your decision.

  • Thanks for posting! Really informative. I’ve been fortunate to play a lot of these Epis. I’ve really found the Classic w gloss finish to be great bang for the buck. One of my fave Epis lately has been the new 1959 but only drawback was tho it played great I just didn’t like how the laurel board looked on the one I played, probably no big deal but it got in my head and bugged me lol.

  • If it has to be an Epiphone, then I would go with the Joe Bonamassa 1955 LP with P90’s. Second choice would be the 1959 with Custombuckers.

  • Fun overview! I have played a 1968 Gibson Custom that I bought from a friend in 1974 'almost for life' (still have it in the studio) and I can happily say that the Epi Cantrell Wino would be the replacement I'd buy now – except for the fact that I already bought it when it was released. The '60s neck & ebony fretboard feel familiar to me, very comfortable. Epi's are coming out with some terrific stuff these few years.

  • I just received my EPIPHONE LP Custom in Alpine White, im completely blown away by the slim taper neck & Ebony fretboard and the EPIPHONE pro bucker pickup s. I have the 490R and 498T pickup s in my Gibson LP Studio so I don't feel cheated at all with these pickup s. The Gibson open book headstock isn't a deal breaker for me and being the bargain hunter that I am , I was thrilled to get the demo or open box version for $630.00. It's truly 1 of my guitars that's inspiring me to play everyday. Great job as always Play n trade guitars!!!!

  • I'd buy the les paul custom alpine white, and install a red "kill switch" button, giving it Buckethead vibes. Epi's have come a LONG way!

  • I have an old Samick-made LP Custom that I've had for a billion years. but, a year or so ago I bought a new Modern Figured that is absolutely fantastic!!! I think I prefer the newer one to my 1989 model!

  • Had a few Epiphone Les Pauls. Traded a couple in, including a Lazarus when I bought a Gibson 60s sunburst. At that point I always thought I would keep my Epiphone Classic in honey burst, looks & feels great, but now when you plug it in after the Gibson, it sounds terrible. Fiddling with the coil splits soon looses its appeal on the classic, but occasionally the out of phase is interesting. It may be on borrowed time as is my Junior. Used to fun to play, but can sound indifferent & needs intonation. Before getting the Gibson, I looked at the higher end Epiphone Les Paul's, but glad I saved up & traded up. Once you get to the £1k price area for a great looking & appointed Epiphone it is now not too much of a stretch to look at a Gibson Les Paul studio.

  • Yeah I agree the "one for life" would be the IBGC Custom in alpine white, Steve Jones’s Excalibur. But not for me, because I love my Adam Jones art series Sensation and my Maybach Lester 54 with p90s and Bigsby.
