  • Ah, the 90s. Only one show(major network) did I care about so my list is simply one theme song and it’s so good, no need for all that sitcom stuff…

Twin Peaks(theme) by Angelo Badlamenti. He and David lynch crafted something so perfect and timeless that it will live on forever.

  • Paul, there is an Ab Fab episode where the main character's boyfriend found 'the lost Beatles tapes', I think you would really enjoy it, cameo from Elton John too

  • I don’t have much to add (apart from saluting Crystal for MST3K!), but I will say that, possibly my favorite theme and show from the 90s was the animated version of The Tick. Fantastic show with a wonderful sense of humor and an infectious, fun theme. Give it a watch—you’ll thank me later.

  • There's also the song Step By Step by the Crests. Old school doo-wop i.e. Tommy core. 😉 And maybe Saved By The Bell was the Robin Gibb song? And maybe Wings should've used a song by… Wings?

I liked Paula Cole. I still do. I guess her lyrics can be annoyingly "I am me. I am fire. I am power" etc, but I still have a soft spot for her. Ha.

Kudos for the Living Color and Martin mentions. I'm borderline love/hate for the Seinfeld show itself let alone its theme. Bruce Miller composed the Frasier theme and it was indeed sung by Kelsey Grammer. Either way, I don't like that one. Ha! Sorry.

I'm surprised Paul and Tommy don't remember the show Oz since I believe it was the first popular "gritty" show HBO had before the Sopranos which premiered a few years after Oz did. Hell, Peter Criss was in an episode or two of that show. He talks glowingly about it in his book.

The theme to Friends being a "Starbucks version of Beatles power pop". Interesting. Might actually be my favorite 1990s TV theme tune. Ha! I actually had to learn the song in my chorus class in Junior High and my mother got me the CD single of the Rembrandts' This House Is Not A Home which had their version of the Friends theme as the second track/"B-side". So, I guess I have a soft spot for it for those reasons. I started watching the show when they began to have reruns of it but I stopped after a while.

I guess I'm the only one who couldn't get into Freaks And Geeks.

Another show I never watched but kinda dug the theme was Coach. And a show that used a previously established song as its theme but it made sense considering who the star of the show was, Tracey Takes On (Tracey Ullman) and her version of They Don't Know. Sadly, I never watched much of that one. Was too young for it at the time. Ha. My mother watched some of it, though, as she did her show on Fox which introduced us to the Simpsons.

And possibly a VERY obscure theme because the show was local in the NYC area and a kids show that I watched mainly because they would show Looney Tunes cartoons in between – Steampipe Alley. Was my introduction to none other than Mario Cantone who hosted it and has since said he hated doing. Ha! Was on from 1988-1993, so it could be both a 1980s and a 1990s show, I guess. His impression of Julia Child is still killer to me and they did other odd bits on the show like Find Sammy Davis Jr's Eye In The Stuffing. Yes, this was a kids show. Amazing, huh? Good times. 😉 You can find clips of it here on YouTube, which sadly is the only way one can see them now since they apparently erased the master tapes. Thankfully, a clip of Marky and Joey Ramone on the show popped up on the Ramones Raw DVD years ago as well.

Speaking of Sex And The City, I'll just tell this story. – Chris Tardio. One probably doesn't know him by name but he's popped up on many different TV shows and movies through the years, including a few episodes of the Sopranos where he was paired with Lillo Brancato who is probably best known as the star (along with De Niro anyway who also directed it) of A Bronx Tale. Anyway, me and my parents used to live next door to Chris and his family (his brother and his parents) and on occasion when my mother and I would be in the swimming pool, we'd see him come out in their backyard in his swimming trunks and just lay on the deckchair to get a tan. Yeah, he was one of those. Ha! He started out as a model but then I guess started to get acting gigs afterwards including, besides the Sopranos, Sex And The City. So…. in 2003, Elvis Costello is hosting David Letterman's show because Dave was out with the shingles and they had several guest hosts filling in and Elvis was one of them and did a surprisingly good job with it, I thought. One of the guests that night with Kim Cattrall. And I dunno, she comes out and it's like I had a Monkee Davy Jones "stars in my eyes" moment. Yeah… I liked her. So, much later on, I'm flipping through the channels and come across Sex And The City, and I just put it on out of curiosity and I see Chris Tardio is in this episode. "Cool!", I thought. And then he starts making out with Kim Cattrall. "Wow…", I thought. And in the same episode, Alanis Morissette is playing Spin The Bottle with Sarah Jessica Parker and THEY end up kissing each other. Mind blown. I tell my father this and days or weeks later ends up talking to Chris on the phone and says to him, "My son hates you now." "Why?", Chris responds. "Because you made out with Kim Cattrall", he answers. He starts laughing and says something about that she had bad breath anyway. Of course I didn't really hate him and I'm sure he knew that hence his laughter. If he made out with Debbie Harry on the other hand…… Let's just say politics is only ONE reason why I'm not that keen on James Woods. (Check out Videodrome if you haven't already. In my opinion, Debbie's best acting performance and not just because of "that" scene. Ha.)

    Happy Halloween everyone! 🙂

  • It's the TGIF of countdowns and this is where the fun begins in the early 90s there were so many iconic themes and then there's the latter half of the 90s where it started getting cheesy
