  • Luke J, not sure why there isn't a reply option to your question, so answering here.  Yes, in general, Edge's Vox AC-30 is supposedly always set clean, but on the edge of breaking up to give a slight crunch.  It's what gives Streets and other songs that nice grit.  He usually drives the pre-amp stage of the amp with the SDD3000 pre-amp for that grit.  Then on some songs like WOWY he adds some tube drive for a fuller sound.

  • so you're pushing the amp clean till it breaks and adding some slight gain beyond that?

  • Hello Michael! I have a series of tone questions that you might be able to answer:

    My Gear:
-Sunburnt stratocaster (Regular Strat Picukps and No whammy-bar)
-Vox VT20+ (Can simulate an AC30)
-POD HD500 (All the effects I could ever need)
    -E-bow

    Tone Questions:
    1. I have Great tones for "Bad", "Streets", "Wire", etc. WOWY is hardest tone to achieve for me. It sounds good for the most part,
****I have a very Quacky/squeaky High-E string… Is it the tone? Pickups? or just need to replace that bad String?
    2. The Delay sounds in time for the most part. But Do i need 2 delays or 1?
     -(8th Note) > (1/8 Dotted w/mod) or just (dotted 1/8 w/mod)?
    3. Reverb; Plate or Octo?
    4. Distortion & compressor: I currently use Vetta-comp and a Red-Comp.
(could send pictures of my tone).
    5. Do i need to be in a special type of room to record for a guitar cover?

I want to thank you for all your U2 Guitar help, because without it I could never play my favorite U2 songs. I just ask you because I know how to play the songs, tone is what I struggle with, which is just as important!

  • If you mean the sharp attack or "scratch-like" chime, it's the pick. Edge uses a blue Herdim and plays it on the side so the little dimples scratch the strings and give it some "bite." He's not using the normal, smooth point of the pick. He's essentially using it backwards.

  • A cheap but pretty effective way of getting an edge shimmer is the Behringer RV660 reverb stomp box (set to space effect), I hear the line 6 verbzilla also has the same type of effect but have not tried it myself. If I can get my webcam working will post a sample to youtube at bigtimpalmer

  • @clevers666 :

Shimmer on the cheap: get an eBow. About $100. I show it in one of the WOWY tutorials and in the UF tutorials. I forget the intro track. It's a Canadian band. Song was used on the Vertigo tour before the concert started. Thx!

  • Thanks for the lessons . How could I get the shimmer thing on the cheap ? Also what,s the title of your intro track ? My set up is ; ibanez rg 320 – boss me 50 – marshall valvestate 40v. I think i need to join the forum your on about. i love this band and the sonic exploration of the edge in particular. I seen them in cardiff 88 , part of the joshua tree tour. That with or without reminds me of sunny greek islands. That,s because i had it on holiday in greece at the time. cheers steve 🙂
