Paul Turner – Getting the gig with Jamiroquai /// Scott’s Bass Lessons

► Check Out The Full Episode Here: http://bit.ly/2vUidX9

Today we’re sitting down with one of the groovers and shakers behind the UK’s funk bass scene… Paul Turner!

In the hierarchy of Jamiroquai bass players, Paul was the first to really revolutionise the bands old-school bass sound since Jay Kay began a new chapter without Stuart Zender. Having joined right at the beginning of the group’s promo run for 2005’s Dynamite album, we all looked on with great interest as Paul was brought into the fold. Luckily for Jay Kay, he has without question earned the right to put his own stamp on one of the most coveted bass gigs in popular music.

Outside of Jamiroquai, Paul has enjoyed an incredible career as a first-call session player, providing the low-end for the likes of Take That, Annie Lennox, Omar, Ruby Turner, Bryan Ferry, Kylie Minogue and Tom Jones. Recently, he’s been keeping busy with UK funk outfit, Brother Strut.

In this episode you’re going to learn:
– All about his bass gear, including a run-down of Paul’s Jamiroquai pedalboard.
– How Paul survived the Jamiroquai audition process.
– What it was like touring the world with artists like Take That and Annie Lennox.
– Why he still tips his hat to the bass playing of Stuart Zender.
– And much much more!

  • I'm sorry, Zanders kind of an asshole;
    But in fairness, I'm relatively new to the party . I like this turners licks better.

  • Jamiroquai began with ZENDER… Then there was Fyffe… MEH… then came Paul. Jamiroquai is Zender/Turner… Fyffe was just a filler.

  • But seriously folks… jamiroquai officially ceased being JAMIROQUAI with the release of 'Deeper Underground' (Big Up to Stuart Zender. R.i.P Toby Smith)

  • Jamiroquai had a live Facebook broadcast yesterday (July 18 2017) from Switzerland and Paul Turner was front and center. It's hard explaining to folks (especially non-musicians) that if you like what you hear out of Jamiroquai during a show, it's because of Jay Kay's voice and Paul Turner's bass. Paul makes the song.

  • Obviously I lovethe stuff that Paul is playing with Jamiroquai but personally I thought the bass playing that he did with the " Pasadenas in the mid 80's was some of Paul's best playing

  • Man i played Runaway at a gig a couple of weeks back, the most fun i've ever had playing bass live 😀 even managed to sneak in a bass solo as we didn't really have synths to fill in the bridge section hahaha

  • Here's a great idea. have the guest teach a lesson. I'd love Paul to teach Runaway. I want to know his exact notes and fingerings.
