One of the biggest musical instrument and pro audio manufacturers in the world, Peavey knows a thing or two about building great guitar amplifiers at all areas of the spectrum, from high-gain all-valve monsters such as the 6505, to the Bandit – which nearly every guitarist in the world must have plugged in to at one time or another.

Sitting in the middle of this expansive product range is the popular ValveKing line, which combines made-in-China pricing with boutique features and Peavey’s customary reliability. Nine years or so since the originals were launched, Peavey has recently rebooted the entire range with new cosmetics and a raft of features that merit a closer look. Let’s dive in as Guitarist editor Jamie Dickson talks and plays through the 20-watt combo version.

  • Seriously, this is a WORLD-CLASS example of how to present a complex subject (a multi-featured guitar amp) giving us no more—but no less—than exactly what we need to know. The audio examples (text and visuals) are simply the best! And after a lifetime of owning and using other guitar amps, and because of this video, I just went out and ordered a used Peavey ValveKing 20!!! I am truly excited to have done so (it should be here in the studio in about a week) so… THANK YOU!

And because of its obvious versatility (succinctly shown in your video) the VK will sit proudly next to some much more expensive amps that are very nice, but sadly one-trick ponies that are often NOT what you want when in a pressure cooker of a recording session, trying to get a certain sound out of an amp in the shortest time possible.

  • When i pressed the button Channel select it does like a double click, is that normal.?? The other buttons doesn't do that.

  • i can hear a little bit of buzz/fizzle on the cleans … dose the amp buzz … if it dose not … a 2 channel amp with these kind of features for this kind of money surely is hard to beat …. do you get a footswitch with it and dose it switch from clean to gain ? …. or just a boost from the footswitch ? or both ? … if it can do clean to gain in a switch and boost on another switch then im down for buying one of these …

  • I have a Blues Jr which I love and is going nowhere. But I just might need to adopt this to the family as well. Great sounding amp. Sounds real sweet.

  • I had my heart set on getting the Classic 20 mini head, or a Blues Jr..then I played this thing. This amp is in a totally different league. Dif strokes for dif folks but the Valveking pretty much does everything the Classic 20 did only better. I'm not sure if it needed new tubes or what or if it's just a characteristic of the amp but when I played the Classic 20 head, the gain was was kind of fizzy. As in fizzy to the point where it almost sounded crackly, or like something was loose/frayed. Still sounded great but that fizz kept me from getting it.

  • I love my first gen vk112 50. I do, however would have liked a verb tank instead of the humdrum digital reverb on this one.

  • More of a demo than a review since you didn't really mention anything that you didn't like. But still useful and informative.

  • I bought a used micro head for around $300 and couldn't be happier with it. Hard rock, blues, clean and country, it does it all and being a Peavey, it's built like a tank.
