Pedals vs Multi-FX: WHO WINS?!

In this video, I’ll show you the pros and cons of individual pedals vs. multi-effects. I’ll take you through my journey of using pedals and the different pedalboards I’ve built along the way. I’ll reveal a hidden feature of the Line6 HX Stomp that no one is using and give away the patch for free. I’ll also talk about the cost and versatility of multi-effects and how it can potentially save you money. I’ll also share my signal chain preference and how I’ve traveled with my pedals through the years. Don’t forget to subscribe and like this video to help me reach 100k subs by April 2023. I’ll be reading all comments left in the first 48 hours and answering your pedal-related questions. Help me beat the last video’s record of almost 4k likes by reaching 5k on this video.

  • I'm poor so I went with an MS60B+ and a mix inexpensive dedicated pedals. It probably cost in the same ballpark or more than the HX Stomp but I built it over time. I've had some of my pedals for decades! I think I got my Boss BF-2 in the late 80's! It's been a journey.

  • Nice video! I have the HX Stomp XL and really like it. I haven’t got the delays to react like my analog Diamond Memory Lane 2. But it’s close enough with an expression pedal on the feedback and a Saturnworks 10k pot dial controlling time. I love the idea of traveling with minimal gear. Just got a Nanuk 935 for a small pedal board AND my clothes and toiletries. We’ve been flying to a lot of one off shows these days.

  • Single pedals are better for the specific individual tone of the pedal and the effect but the multi effects is a much better bang for your buck

  • Cmon nipple lips I want to know the difference between standalone fx pedals and modelers and five minutes of my life is gone with no answers

  • I sure can see the point for travel and gigging. Multi-FX is much simpler and probably less prone to breaking down.

  • Still really prefer pedals. You have so many more options. I go my first taste of digital on my Spark 40. Nice and I still use it to travel but just don’t care for pure digital.

  • Amazing video. Thanks! I love your content.
On 4:57 it seems that you tried HX Stomp + Es 5. How did you route them?
I am currently thinking of having the HX in one of the snd/rtn of the Es5, so I can move it around in the pedal chain.
    Cheers from Japan

  • In the cost of living especially in 2024, is the cost purely the cost. I used Bias FX 2 it's all in one since I don't have that kind of money.

  • Digital is always lesser sounding than the Analog originals, simple because its digital, which means loss of signal (just compare the waveforms). So the original Analog pedals always win of the digital simulation in a Multi-FX.Everybody who says different does not know where they are talking about or tries to convince themselves or others that they have the best stuff (a typical trait of self-deception, common to many Helix owners etcetera).

  • How are the envelope filter options in the HX stomp compared the popular pedal options available on the market today (Qtron, MXR, Spacial Delivery, Microtron IV)? Great? Bad? Close enough?

  • Does the compressor on a multi-effect pedal actually compress your signal or just recreate what a compressor sounds like? Is it an actual fully working compressor?

  • Great video. I love pedals, and still use a few on my board. But I took the HX plunge. It's just so convenient to have all of those options in one box. Works great with the pedals I still use.
I also love that if I'm going to be playing a smaller tighter stage, I can get 90% of my full setup in 2-3 total pedals (including the HX).

  • Prior to moving to Costa Rica almost 4 years ago, I sold all of my pedals and bought an HX Effects. It was a decent unit and I used it in many variations. It lasted 3 years before it glitched itself to death. I opted to go with some pedals this last Christmas. Walrus, Earthquaker, Wren and Cuff, TC Jauring overall. Much happier with the performance and tones.

  • I picked up a zoom multieffect unit because I have no idea what I want. Obviously this comes with a few trade offs and short comings. I now know what I want to sound like and what capabilities I want available.

  • I honestly do not use time and depth based effects enough to prefer analog and I do play at the highest and most articulate level of skillsets.
For gain and clipping, I will almost exclusively prefer analog but there's plenty of digital that rivals it and I own some.
For some effects like chorus and pitch shifting, it's a true adventure to find digital that will satisfy most players but it does exist.
I personally use high gain, moderate clipping and a tiny bit of reverb with the occasional delay.
That in itself makes pedals a dead end for me when I do want to use time and depth based effects beyond the traditional.
Ultimately, digital tends to fail us in terms of clarity especially if you are a shred and sweep player but there are still tons of great units out there that provide it. The price tag ranging from $150 to $1500 with both price points and all those in between actually producing a lot of garbage if your needs are eccentric like my own for shredding, instrumentals and 2-hand touch.
The Headrush unit I returned was so ridiculously disappointing for the pedals, cabinets and amps that my 14 year old Zoom G2.1MA genuinely made it look terrible and I only use about 4 of the Zoom's amps/pedal models, and heavily overdrive them with a circuit I designed and built myself because I'm an electronics engineer.
Any modeler I own will never have the distortion set beyond 25% and on average, I set them at 0 and overdrive them with my pedal.
Ultimately, I will stop buying gear and simply design and build it myself right down to my power amplifier stages.

  • I'd love to hear how you compared the individual pedals with the hx stomp and why you chose the ones you did over the stomp.

  • i have a question if you get a multi fx do you still need a power supply like the block thing even if its just 1 pedal?

  • I use a ton effects with my band, so it would make sense for me to have one of these. The problem is that I have a particular way of using and stacking pedals that I have never been able to replicate with one unit. I always end up running into usability issues and setting up to replicate my sounds takes me more time than just turning 3 knobs on my pedals. I would need a full MIDI setup, which I do not have the patience to program, just for my entire effects catalog to change when we write new songs

  • I miss the days of 2 pedals on the floor. We are so much further along than we were, but I have to always guard myself from a gear addiction.

  • Anyone who understands mass production knows that this concept proves how stupid people are. Ever product created has variance. If you are going to criticize the emulators today against the real deal and admit that they are close, you are admitting that perception is more determinative than fact.
The technology is so good now that an IR of an amp/mic/room is more exact than any reproduction.
