The Best Guitar Pickups

https://www.montysguitars.com/
https://www.dimarzio.com/

Here’s a new video where I deep dive on the replacement pickups in 5 guitars. I started out with 4 and then remembered Larry DiMarzio !!

The other 4 companies are small boutique builders. All the pickups in this video are great, and highly recommended.

  • Glad to see knowing that wood, brand and style of guitar for solid body electrics has zero effect on tone being now common knowledge. You can spend $200 on strings, pickups, pots, set up the neck and bridge on a $200 guitar and have a better sound than a $1500 guitar.

  • If the pickup manufacturers would finally understand and publish the frequency curves of their pickups, life would be much easier. In such a case it would be really easy to immediately see, what a pickup sounds like and also it would become obvious how many pickups actually sound nearly identical. Even the publication of the actual inductance, capacitance and serial resistance of the pickups would help a lot as it would allow to calculate the frequency response.

Instead of publishing these technical parameters (which suddenly make comparisons possible!) the manufacturers concentrate on marketing bullshit and using "the rare materials", "silver wire", "wire from the 50s" , "pure vintage materials" and other senseless wording. Humans are so easy to betray. Of course there are differences between pickups, but the manufacturers avoid intentionally (or because they do not have the technical knowledge) to publish the actual technical parameters, as this would immediately destroy their marketing "bullshit" ….

  • i put Kinman P90s in my 150$ chinese guitar… and now I sound like a 2000$ guitar. they even fix missed notes! jkjk
Axysmagnetics make some seriously good asymmetrical wound pickups that are amazing too.

  • Hard to hear the pickups when you just add endless drive. All the guitars end up sounding the same because we are just hearing the pedals.

  • I have a Swiss RELISH pick-up swapping guitar, and a very nice instrument it is too! Both pickups can be swapped, I have 2 humbuckers that came with the guitar, and have subsequently purchased 2 more from Cream T….the company that bought out the RELISH technology after the company went bust. I have a Duchess P90, and a single coil Strat-type pup….both sound fantastic! Cream T make Billy Gibbon’s pickups, and Keef’s too, the “Banger & Mash” humbucker set! They also make their own pickup swapping guitars utilising the RELISH technology. Their pickup swapping system has been renamed GUITAR-X.
They’re available from Sound Affects on Reverb

  • I have a strat that will cancel sustained sound from unwound strings when picking a wound string. Maybe a pickup problem do you have any advice?

  • I build one off tube amps and have been playing guitar since the early 80's, toured and opened for many of the greats back in the day. The biggest things to easily improve tone is better pickups and better speaker(s). It is amazing how much difference a late 50's Jensen will make a most basic tube amps sound like a 50's Fender Tweed, etc. My favorite pickup at the moment is a late 60's Patent Sticker T-Top albeit I haven't had the privilege to play an original PAF.

  • If you strum all six strings of a guitar in standard (EADGBe) tuning what chord would you play?

  • I’ve got a build coming up with 25.5” scale bolt on, hipshot hardtail, and overall materials that I’m concerned will sound too bright. Love this style of PAF. Do you think they’re creamy enough for that style of build?

  • Personally know of two PRs guitars where pickups were very thin and not pleasant at all.

  • Afaik this guitar has the Amber ones stock. It would be interesting to do a shootout

  • Which Monty's set did you use?? Under-wound or standard PAF? I NEED to know. I want my 335 to sound like that!

  • Gee I recently bought a new guitar. I loved the look of the PRS and I tried to love the sound but I just couldn't. I found them too toppy and scratchy. I really tried but couldn't do it

  • Always a pleasure to listen to you, and your music. Which video did you play the Fender Squire bass vi. Thanks

  • I do like a variety of pickups single n double or humbuckers and the old Les Paul Juniors/melody makers had a serious twang similar to fender single coils I have one mix double coil and two singles in a Squire strat to me its a mix of a fender and gibson and it was cheap I cant imagine what a custom shop would have charged me??

  • Great video as usual. I would add Kloppmann pickups out of Germany and Bare Knuckle Pickups out of the UK to this list. DiMarzios though have been my goto PU company for years. Somehow I never warmed up to Seymour Duncans for some reason.

  • Tim I have listened to a lot of pickups and I have never been as impressed with any pickups as much as way the Kinman pickups sound. Thing is they are really expensive.

  • Glad to hear you trial Kinman pups, I’ve been a big fan of Chris Kinman and his products for a long time. Amazing that he isn’t better known (maybe because he’s an Aussie?). Chris has an amazing story and is truly the “King of the Noiseless Pickup.”
