Blues by yourself.. no need for backing tracks or loopers on this one. Guitar playing rarely gets more rewarding than being able to sit down and improvise entire pieces of music by yourself.. and blues is the perfect form for learning how to do just that!
As always, we cover a ton of important, fundamental concepts needed to play authentically in this vintage blues style so don’t skip through the lesson in case you miss something profoundly important.
Also, stick around til the end to hear how I dialled in my tone for this one. Featuring my 53’ Gibson es125 and my 1957’ Fender Tweed Champ.

  • So, now I've got the finishing touches from you. Great tune. It also took me 4 months. But worth every minute of practicing. Very well instructed by you. Thanx. What a fun to play

  • Top man. Been on the lookout for some delta blues to practice. The older I get I feel more connected to blues. A reflection of the times.

  • As a 68-yr-old UK guitar teacher who teaches acoustic blues and ragtime (amongst other styles) to novices in this genre, I have to say that this video is by far the most succinct, concise and clear explanation – with the best and most useable examples – that I've come across to date. I'll be recommending your channel to my students, so hopefully you'll pick up some more subs. Please keep up the absolutely sterling work.

  • I need to learn this style because you can entertain with simply an acoustic. You don't need to sing, it's soulful and as I get older it's at a pace that I can execute. Not that it's easy, but more attainable. Thanks Alex!!

  • Incredible detail, passion and knowledge Alex, even down to the mic choices, positioning and string gauge! We are very lucky to have you!

  • That a Delta Blues masterpiece there Alex. Beautifully played and I am super inspired by this.

  • I love that guitar I had the same one given to me from my grand parents. I sold it along time ago how dumb I was back then.

  • Hello Alex, I hope everything is healthy and cheerful. I'm still working on the piece and I'm starting to despair a little. I've already managed it, but there's still a long way to go. I had already thought about giving up, but I can't get this great song out of my head and then it grabs me again. I'm not a pro player, as I say here in this forum, I started 2 years ago and the first year was hard on my fingers☺

I'm sure I still lack some skills to put my wish into practice. Well, I just wanted to give you some feedback on where I am now…

pretty much at the beginning ☺

  • 9:07 When you say the root note on top, do you mean the first note you see looking down? i thought you went by how the notes would appear as pitches on a music staff. i'm confused.

  • Can you take apart Tampa Red's The Jitter Jump and analyze it like this one?

  • I highly recommend downloading the materials for this little etude! Diving in a little deeper will be very rewarding. At first glance this typical E-Blues may appear like something we have all played a million times before. But this incredible teacher has added some EXTREMELY interesting little tricks and details to the basic concept! These small elements definetely make a huge difference and adds enormous freshness to the relationship with the beloved Instrument. I cannot thank You enough, Alex!!!

  • Man! Thank you for going into such detail. This is something to work on for awhile
Ive been doing deep dives of the old style blues and how they got there sound…one documentary said it came from British ballads. Eitherway i had to find out how to play it. Love the sound, since all our music stems from the blues. Kinda like every dog got a wolf in em , you know….we all got some blue in us ???????? thx brotha

  • I appreciate that you explain this in a deliberate, moderately slow manner.

Also that you identify the proper notes on the fretboard, so that 71 year old Geezers can absorb this knowledge gradually.

You explain how to work in the arpeggios in a relaxed mode.

  • This lesson contains all the Delta Blues moves I was lacking. I was in the doldrums and now the sun has come out.

  • Hello Alex, thank you very much for your super good blues piece. I'm from Germany and I'm trying to play your lesson. I find it really hard to get the right beat and then the right string, but it's a challenge.
My question is how long did you practice this piece to play it perfectly. Maybe you'll have the chance to write me a short message.
    Sorry for my Google English.

  • Got a small exposure to this style but not enough to comfortably improvise. This reaaaally filled in some blanks. One of the best vids out there, and instant sub. Thank you!
