Great playing bur too much reverb on the tele. Funk should be drier and compressed more
Funny that when you did the wahwah delay thing my mind immediately went to jungle/dnb (presumably because whatever song you were referencing has been sampled a lot). Generational context differences!
Thinking about the thin pick and why it makes fast complex rhythmic strumming easier. I like to say that a thin pick gives helpful compression. There's a limit to how hard you can push with a thin pick before it just folds and slides over to the next string, and that provides a forgiving evenness to strumming. With a heavy pick you reach the point where you could push the strings until they break, and you have to make a more deliberate choice to let the pick release the string, which gives you wide dynamics options, but requires more control. Helpful reduced dynamics is a way of describing the musical impact of compression, and wider dynamic range is normally where you start before you introduce compression.

Great video, but don’t ever forget Sly & The Family Stone when it comes to funk.
I've been playing for years and still can't strum 16ths evenly for any length of time at 120bpm. I also can't shred, or play fast generally. Are some people just not able, despite practise?
Fortunately I can play at mid tempos with good feel, but it's a bit one-dimensional. Please help!

"resurgence *of late*" tell me you forgot about Daptone without telling me you forgot about Daptone. I think the current wave of funk revivalists has been constant for close to a couple decades now.
Some Strat type guitars (e.g. Tom Anderson S) have a pull switch which allows you to blend the neck & bridge pickups. That is great for funk rhythm. To get that on my Strat I had a Fezz Parka mod which gives you one master volume control, one master tone control and the last pot is the blend control.
Funk is about syncopation. One of the best funk guitarists who can really get an audience moving is the great Nuno Bettencourt. Who also mixes it up with metal, rock, and other styles. Additionally, Buckethead is also a great funk guitarist and funk bass guitarist.
