Playing bass for David Bowie (his last bass player)

So a few weeks ago I got the chance to spend some time with the legendary bass player, Tim Lefebvre (the guy who played bass on Bowie’s last album, Black Star!)… and the guy who’s influenced thousands of bass players around the globe.

Side note: … if you catch a bass player using adventurous pedal board of effects – it’s very likely that Tim will be the top of their influence list.

He’s played with the likes of the Tedeschi Trucks band, Sting, Elvis Costello, Wayne Krantz, John Mayer, Knower… you get the idea 😉

In this video you’re going to learn about what it was really like recording Bowie’s final album, the studio process, the bass gear used, the effects he used… and how Bowie disguised himself whilst walking the streets of NYC (he had an awesome stealthy trick!).

As always, see you in the shed…

Scott 🙂

  • That mid section of BlackStar is so tasty.. I could take a 20 minute version of that 10 minute song of just that part.. It's so friggin good. Dude is so blessed to be a massive part of Mr Bowie's final pieces. RIP David.. Long Live Tim

  • What a nice guy, but for me Trevor Bolder will always be my go to Bowie bass player….amazing that he literally had to come up with those legendary bass lines pretty much on spec.

  • Alongside Jameson, Tim is definitely Michael League’s favourite bassist. I’ve heard him say it in multiple interviews.

  • To this day I don't understand how David Bowie himself pronounced it like "Joey" but his own countrymen insist on saying it wrong.

  • I'd never ever heard of him till today after watching the Michael League interview on the SBL channel! Kinda shocking, as I consider myself an anorak ????

  • Always loved his playing with Wayne Krantz and Keith Carlock. That trio took the music to ridiculous levels.

  • I thought Gail Ann Dorsey was Bowie's bass player for a long time — why wasn't she on Blackstar?

  • You guys gotta get Pino to do a video with you. There's no footage of him talking bass like anywhere.

  • That bass guy American? Must be. Everybody else would say Bowie was carrying a Spanish, Russian, German, French, whatever language newspaper under his arm; only Americans are so ignorant and insulting, the only thing they notice is "foreign".
And it's not even contextually correct since wherever that paper was edited/printed it's everything but foreign but pretty much at home.

  • I have a squier pj bass and i change everything on it and all fender original things to it and i love the neck on the squier. And i have custom shop 62 fender p single coil pickup and original fender jazz bass pickup to it. And all things who are stock on my bass are the neck and body all others its change and its a real real work horse and my bass have a value of 1000$ now and its a real good peice of bass i use it for rock, pop, heavy metal, funk, jazz and more. So i will not buy a original fender because my custom squier pj bass have everything i wanted and now when i change all its have been a really good work horse and killer bass for me. And its sounds like the original american fender p bass. So i did a hard job to think and search what i wanted and what could do my bass to a killer fender bass. So my dream have come true.

  • Um, am I the only one who noticed the interviewer doesn’t pronounce “Bowie” correctly?

  • Hi Scott 🙂 I'd love to see an interview and detailed effects session with John Davis of 'Nerve'! I know he has done some in the past but there's nothing present and in depth out there at the moment about his unique approach. Thanks for all your great work on the path of bass!

  • Scott, just to let you know I will no longer subscribe to your channel as YT has demonetized many channels. I take free speech seriously and as such I will not support YT by watching their ads. ADBLOCK will be on permanently.

  • Nice, and mad respect for showing KNOWER. Incredibly talented group. It's how I first became familiar with Sam Wilkes who is now one of my favorite bassists

  • Blackstar is a masterpiece. It's crazy considering its the final project of an insane career. Bowie is a genius

  • Funny, I would TOTALLY expect David Bowie to be carrying a foreign language newspaper……
