Ramble On – John Paul Jones – Isolated Bass track
John Paul Jones isolated bass track from “Ramble On” from the Led Zeppelin II.
I had a blast transcribing this awesome track from JPJ, which is, IMHO, one of some of his best works along with all of the other tracks on this album. You can hear how precise his sixteenth notes are. How tight his playing is. So It was easy to come up with a pretty accurate bass transcription/Tab of John Paul Jones’s performance. You can check out my transcription in standard notation & tab at

Thank you! You got Barney Miller and Seinfeld, so I'm good. The Fish and Sanford & Son themes are great, too. Great to see you play them. Always thought Barney Miller started on E 😉

A bass so solid you could build a house on it
????????????
Led Zeppelin II is how I learned to play bass
The least remarcable memeber of your band is among the top 10 in his instrument of choice. That says a lot about LZ.
JPJ probably has a foam mute under his strings. The bass sounds more compressed even for flatwounds. It was standard practice at the time.
JPJ and Bonham carried so many Zeppelin songs. Plant and Page were awesome. But JPJ was special.
Started playing bass as a teen in '76, listened to this over and over with the headphones on, finally got it right, Never. Love JPJ. Thanks for sharing.
que bestiaaa
What Bass and Settings gets me these sounds? Assuming I could ever play it properly, that is.
Have ALWAYS sung this bassline when playing this track
I have always loved this bass line, but I would really like to hear how it would sound on a fretless.
I often wonder what my isolated sound is like when playing live
Was it my imagination that I could hear (but only just) more than the bass track only?
I've always felt that JPJ and Martin Turner of Wishbone Ash were the best bassists in rock music. Their choice of notes is gorgeous. All of it. No scrambled eggs; just perfect notation.
Underrating is so underrated in an underratingesque kind of underrate.
One of my favorite basslines.
And the there’s Keith playing on Sympathy for the devil.
They all listened to James Jamerson.
No one played bass like John Paul Jones. He was very innovative.
A Universe in it self
Very few bands can produce songs with melodic bass lines. JPJ is definitely awesome, but I feel the magic is the entire band, working together. The Who. The Beatles. Zeppelin. Maybe Rush. and Yes.
I can only presume that James Jamerson and John Paul Jones had some sort of quantum connection.
That was an awful job isolating the Bass ????????
Every time I listen to Ramble On, I'm listening to what JPJ is doing…LZ was lucky to have him (he pushed them to be a better band)
Doot doo
Doot dooOOOoo
Doot doodoodo
Buh Buh Baaah
Doodleooot oot oot oot…
Etc.
professional of professional!
The bass line is the heart and soul of this song. It tells a beautiful story on its own, and does it perfectly.
Just realized I've had this on loop for the past hour…
Ridiculous! A treasure.
Beautiful.
Tight asf
Just awesome!
Im sad I can only like this once
I made such a great decision 40 years ago to become a Led Zeppelin fan. It was a natural decision. Natural as the sound of this base playing like a river flowing through time.
Bass tone and sound reminds me of Barney miller show
My first favorite bass player . And still the greatest. I mean that nasty , sexy, groovy, funky, bluesy, riffage that epitomizes Led Zeppelin’s backbone and heartbeat is JPJ. Every melodic note is perfectly placed, seamless, absolutely essential, never superfluous. Without JPJ’s riveting soulful eloquence , Zepp just isn’t. Zepp.
Nowhere near the league of Sid
Better than McCartney, not quite as good as Sting.
This man could play every instrument
Bass is relatively easy to pick and play, but to play it well, it is one of the more difficult instruments. You're driving the ship!
Davie504 NOT approved F U Davie????
Bass is the glue… jP incredible.. awesome
Zep II is my all-time favorite. It’s the most perfect rock album that has ever been recorded.
This is great. It is very difficult to fully track the bass through the sounds of the other instruments. When I was a kid listening to this song, portions of the bass line always stood out, and what I retained in my memory.
The beat of the band ????
Jpj almost went jazz
The tone of this man…
The bass seems so subtle in this song but it is the powerful vehicle that carries the ears down this river of notes.
The glue of led zep
