Reggae chop + reggae guitar effects for beginners

This is my tutorial about reggae guitar effects for beginners. Also I explain briefly how to play reggae rhythm guitar ( reggae chop ).

Playing reggae guitar is easy and difficult at the same time. Technique wise, playing reggae is a breeze but you have to have solid timing. You should use metronome or backing tracks to get the feel for the music.

To play reggae guitar , you don’t really need effect pedals but they come handy if you have them. I like to use delay, reverb and wah.

To get the reggae chop to sound more even, you can use compressor but it’s not necessary.

  • This was awesome. I have a Boss-DD-500 that allows me to do all those trippy: Dub & Filter effects. Sounded great. Enjoyed it.

  • can you explain the chords you are using a bit better. I can see how you get this from a bar chord

  • very nice video with easy and practical tips! thanks. Just wondering which pedal order you have set. I have a problem with my delay pedal. I have this order: Guitar > Wah > OD > Delay. When not playing, the delay makes like an interference sound and it's very annoying. I have already tried another delay pedal, but the issue keeps happening. I'll try to change my pedal order, maybe it helps… if you have any clue, thanks in advance!

  • nice video + classy playing, thanks for the tips… ^^ just wondering, don't you use a reverb pedal?

I'm about to get a set here in Germany from Thomann.de with a Wah + Digital Delay + OD from their brand "Harley Benton". They're affordable and good for the money you pay.

  • Great tones and techniques. I’m the guitarist in a UB40 tribute band. I use Phaser quite a bit and also hear it when playing Wailers tunes. My ear tells me it was much more prevalent in reggae than wah but not many reggae guitarists mention it?????

  • Are you pressing all the way down and just leaving your fingers on the strings when you come back up on the chop? When I do a double chop I just rest my fingers on top/dampen the strings while chopping down and up. When I try pressing down on the down stroke and mute the upstroke with reverb, it drowns out the muted upstroke.
