  • I've got his Maiden "Powerslave / Somewhere In Time" tab book and it's the best tab book I own. Maybe the best one I've ever owned.

  • I started with that Original Randy Rhoads book Wolf mentioned and also 100 metal riffs for guitar ????

  • I got a guitar for Christmas in December of 1988. The first instructional book I purchased was the Star Licks Yngwie book and cassette. The second book I purchased was "Original Randy Rhoads". Still have both of those. You could make an argument that Wolf is on a very short list of the most influential guitar players of the last 45 years. Just influenced a lot of us in a different way.

  • I have that book and learned Dee from it as well. I still look at it occasionally. Wolf is the man! I learned so much from him as a kid

  • Wolf’s Beatles books (containing backing track CD’s recorded with the same gear) are outstanding.

  • Mr. Marshall, thank you for making outstanding tab books. The Randy Rhodes Tribute book was my first book and instantly fell in love with guitar and music. I am certain I would not have got into music without your book mentorship.

  • Ran into him in the early 90s. He still had long hair and I just knew that I knew him from somewhere. Once he introduced himself I was giddy like a school kid. I couldn't believe Wolf Marshall lived near me and we were both members of the same group. Of course, no one else knew who he was.

  • I loved when Wolf transcribed Randy’s incredible outro solo on Ozzy’s “Tonight” from DOAM. His performance notes were full of comments like “massive overdrive”, “blistering runs” and “monstrous controlled feedback” – all accurate of course, it is undeniably the greatest solo of all time.

  • The Randy Rhoads Tribute was the first tab book i ever got also. Mine is so tattered from years of wear. I used to buy everything i could find with Wolf's name on it.

  • I went from taking classical lessons to studying the Wolf Marshall Rock method. I learned more in a week than I did in 2 years of classical lessons.

  • This is so cool! I was telling my fiance that I didn't know he was as big as he is but I first started learning guitar from him through his book series.

  • Great interview so far. I’ve just stopped at around 20 mins to quickly comment that the hearing issue Mike referred to is “diplacusis”. I’ve experienced it a few times before – thankfully not on a gig. One day when I was teaching, I thought there was something wrong with the amp. Every note sounded like a weird pitch shifting effect was there, but when my students talked, their voices sounded like that too. I started freaking out and explained to them what I was hearing. They must’ve thought I was going nuts. I mentioned it to the staff at Bay Audiology here in Wellington NZ when I was getting IEMs fitted and they’d never heard of it. I told them to google it coz I was amazed that no-one had brought it up before. I wondered whether it may have had something to do with getting gunked up by having the occasional, ahem, puff. It’s kinda similar to the blocked ears you get when descending from a hill or mountain, but yeah it’s exactly as Mike described it. Thankfully I haven’t experienced it for several years and am still happily gigging, jamming, practising, listening etc.

  • Wolf Marshall is without a doubt, the greatest and most important guitar educator of the modern era.

  • This dude is suuuuuper smart. I'm not generally blown away by folks intelligence this day in age. This guy i am. What a legend.

  • If it weren’t for Wolf I’d barely know how to play anything! I can’t remember who the other big transcriber was (cuz Wolf sticks out) from back then.

  • Dave Mustaine went on the Alex Jones Show in 2012. He brought up the transcription of the intro to Holy Wars being wrong and mentioned Wolf Marshall as the one who made the error but I think Dave was mistaken the same way Wolf didn't transcribe Metallica albums

  • This is a real treat for us guitarists of the 1980s. Wolf Marshall is definitely a legend. Maybe get Andy Aledort next!

In a way these guys would've been sort of the equivalent to Mike, Rick Beato, Jared Dines, and the top guitar influencers of today. Only the media has changed.

  • Maybe it's just me but I thought I saw Mike wince when Wolf said "before you were born." Anyone know how old Mike is? I suspect he was alive and kicking in 1985 but was too polite to say as much, but I could be wrong. I started playing a few months before I turned 11 in 1984. I always got the impression Mike was younger than me but probably still a Gen Xer. Again, I could be way off.

  • Hi Mike, thank you for shining the light on Mr. Marshall, I’m a longtime guitar player, grew up in the 90s and always struggled to find good tabs, more importantly, Bad tabs were always discouraging and made me put down the guitar, I have just purchased the Randy Rhodes tribute book! Thanks again and will be seeking out Mr. Wolf Marshall’s publications
