Rig Rundown – Adrian Belew

Article and photos: http://bit.ly/AdrianBelewRR

Prog-rock wizard Adrian Belew and his tech Andrè Cholmondeley spent time with Premier Guitar during their current tour to discuss Belew’s love for strange noises and how new tones inspire new songs.

Belew uses two signature Parker Fly guitars, both of which are decked out in custom, 12-coat automobile-finish colors, and feature a Sustainiac Stealth Pro pickup in the neck position, a DiMarzio in the bridge, and a piezo pickup.

Although Belew doesn’t use it live, an onboard Line 6 Variax controller can also be activated by a push-pull knob. All of his guitars use D’Addario NYXL strings.

  • My god ! Adrian is like a great musician, like Bach and those guys! Used to see him with the Bears way back in Portland Starry Nite days, always kind of wondering, how is he doing that? You could see him right there, dragging the weirdest things outta those hot rod Fender Mustangs, I believe, and still wonder, "what in God's name is this? Way ahead…

  • Axe Fx feels like garbage. Sorry. It might sound close but it doesn't feel any better than the first line 6 pod.

  • Lmfao. Thats what im thinking all the time. Thiinkingmif i should comment or not. Just always a tad too close. Coming closer… cringe. Funny how he sometime lifts the guitar between them aas a barrier. But mostly he seemed comfy, gear talking.

  • Andre is one of the kindest humans you will ever meet and a very talented guitarist in his own right . He fronted the Zappa cover band Project Object and teched for Al Di Meola before joining the ABPT. Give him some love when you see him next !

  • The "Cronos AI" system has been gone now for some years now. The new Quantum A.I thankfully brings us all aboard instead of the old system. Sadly, many folks have been duped and have gone along with the old system and brainwashed into thinking that nothing has been change due to the Mainstream Media. The Mainstream Media looses so many viewers each and every day that is so insane. Eventually you all need to go watch the music video of Ronnie James DIO called. "The Last in Line"… No joke that this is what is happening here. Also go watch 1982 "Blade Runner"…. "The Replicants"… AKA the Reptoids and Clones of today. Most people call you crazy until this is all a part of what is really going on here

  • Really?? Come on folks. When a telephone rings or a ring tone sounds then the music changes and everything is never the same? What is that? Can we all be careful and at least have a serious debate where this is all going here? I like Adrian Belew but can we at least have some journalists who ask some serious questions here instead of just AGREEING with what is being said here?

  • My wife and I arrived early at Shank Hall in Milwaukee and were parked just across from the front doors. We got to hear Adrian and Julie and her brother rehearse during their first Power Trio Tour. At one point the music stopped and the front doors opened and out came the three of them. To our surprise they all held hands and started skipping down the way. Laughing the whole time until they made the corner and out of sight. My wife and I thought that was just the coolest thing to have seen that little moment. Love those guys and have seen Adrien five times now including with King Crimson at the New Orleans House of Blues for the Thrak tour.

  • I discovered him when watching some live talking heads shows; phenomenal musician who also seems to be a very down-to-earth fella

  • I totally agree about his guitar playing, but it’s just a shame that he picked up David Byrne’s vocal style, and sound while touring with them. So King Crimson with David Byrne singing lead basically. He does make a huge contribution to Talking Heads best album, Remain In Light. Fear of Music is just as good in my opinion.
