Expanding, evolving, exploring, and enchanting are all applicable when describing the orbit of All Them Witches. Since their 2016 Rig Rundown, the quartet have continued pursuing their sonic mission, unbound by anything but regeneration. Their never-ending musical mutation has yielded three more individualistic, intrepid releases since our last check-in. Sleeping Through the War, in 2017, explored more purposeful, mystical songcraft cloaked in hypnotic, rambunctious rock. For 2018’s ATW, the band’s IV-like retreat (substitute Headley Grange for a Tennessee cabin) extracted a doomier, more chaotic side A equally matched by a side B that’s a psychedelic painkiller. And 2020’s Nothing as the Ideal shows the temporary power trio (drummer Robby Staebler completes the line-up) striking a levitating balance within a menacing, mortar of metal that binds and anchors their emotive, effervescent excursions. (Drop the needle on closer “Rats in Ruin” and let it wash over you.)
Just before their sold-out show at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium (on Halloween, no less), Witches guitarist Ben McLeod and bassist/vocalist Charles Michael Parks Jr. welcomed PG’s Chris Kies onstage to re-chronicle their setups. The resulting conversation covers their modified war horses, deciphers their esoteric stacks, and reveals the secrets of the “doom broom.” Plus, we get hip to new builder Elad Shapiro of Dale Amps.

Ben, I LOVE your playing and phrasing, but it does amuse and ground me to see what you don’t know about gear – the “I didn’t know you could get pickups without covers” had me chuckling. Clearly knowledge of gear isn’t a requirement for great skill, you’re proof of that – keep it coming! ????????????
this is DOPE
Saw them in Germany a few months ago. Amazing band! I felt absolutely in love with their music
Cool, merci.
how did michael split the signal?
“FOD” is Foreign Object Debris on an airport runway. It can be perilous, such as when the Concorde jet crashed due to the effects of a FOD strike in 2000.
31:55 Whenever i see a beautiful Rickenbacker Bass of Honor all i think is CLIFF BURTON
and i get inspired to play Bass while putting my Black Guitars in hold
even if it is a strangely cool looking mutilated bass like this
Volume pedals can also work very well for my instrumental Doommetal music as well
5:30 ahhhh loved whenever a new under looked brand i had no idea that existed shows to display EXACTLY the kind of beauty that i love on my kind of Guitars
is just for me, BLACK SG-Like Model is all you have to say to me
specially with that kind of rare stealthy Gothic beauty that screams METAL so hardcore
Fuck that noise. that bass is sick
Love my honga, it rips!
DOOM BROOM! ????????????????
Kenny Vaughan is really great. His solo on I Still Long for Your Kiss from his Austin city limits performance with Lucinda Williams is probably the best thing on YouTube.
Bassist reminds me of Henry Cavill
Blues driver through that twin sounds sick
more then likely the "Best Band in Modern Times" by a 1,000 country miles*
Parks is hilarious.
It's so warming to hear someone say "I love this guitar".
<3
Man that low E is so floppy on the Knaggs, love it.
A twin reverb with volume at 2,5?
I just discovered this band! So sick
I haven’t listened to this band at all, but as soon as this is over I’m gonna check them out. These guys are awesome.
That was one epic show. Devils night in the mother church. The fog was glowing orange. Saw Michael walking out into the alley afterwards, the same alley that hank Sr is supposed to haunt. Told him thanks for the religious experience and left him to process the previous 2 hours in the cool damp air. Hope to see y'all and sing happy birthday at exit/in again one new years. Stand up guys playing from their hearts.
Love that guy
It's a pity the drums are not a part of the band anymore.
Those dudes are just as cool as I thought they would be.
Those Cut up Ricky basses are kinda awesome
That was awesome! Here is some really killer close-up slide work from Ben…
https://youtu.be/asvZ8zEeiAA
I love Ben! One of the most talented and innovative guitarists out there right now. Very cool dude, as well.
Its interesting how Ben percieves the Bare knuckle Mules to be of higher output even though the Super Distortion is a ceramic magnet with a high resistance (almost 14komh) and the Mules are a PAF clones with AlNiCo 4 magnets and a resistance of 8.4kohm. Im thinking Knaggs either put in something more aggressive in his guitar or its just a frequency thing since the Mules are much more mid forward
See you in Warsaw Poland. CANT WAIT!
No drum rundown?
Parks is an only musician with a blood stained bass guitar that i can feel safe around
The FOD? More like dafuq amirite?
So he doesn't use a noise gate? I use one but that's because I suck really bad and I can't yet control very well those little annoying sounds. Do these pro players just not make those kinds of horrible sounds so they don't use a noise gate?
The part where the host says “NO WAY” when Ben said the Marshall takes fuzzes well had me dying
Best band I've heard in a long time
My god, the guitarists tone is *butter*.
aren't Mule pickups supposed to be low output?
He clearly lied about not knowing about humbuckers without covers lol, such nonsense
Ben makes me want a fender twin and bluesdriver to pair with my Rockerverb lol take my $
LONG LIVE THE BLUES DRIVER.
Well it looks like I am buying a BD-2
Their song "The Children of Coyote Woman" is fantastic and the whole album is great.
I live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland literally like 30 minutes or so from Greensboro.. Knaggs guitar is awesome and it's so cool that my favorite band plays an instrument that is made by a local business.
