Rig Rundown – Dawes’ Taylor Goldsmith, Wylie Gelber, and Duane Betts

PG’s John Bohlinger hung with Taylor Goldsmith, Wylie Gelber, and Duane Betts of Dawes before their April 2016 gig at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. With Gelber’s self-made basses, Goldsmith’s classic axes, and Betts’ historic hand-me-downs, Dawes show that simplicity get’s it done.
Singer/songwriter/guitarist Taylor Goldsmith has an old-school approach to tone.
Taylor Goldsmith’s No. 1 is this Telecaster made from old Fender parts including some vintage ’70s Fender pickups.
Wylie Gelber comes from one of those build-it-yourself families, so it only makes sense that he and his father constructed a pair of 4-strings that he uses on the road and in the studio. His No. 1 is this Model III which features a 1960s Gibson mini humbucker in the bridge and a ’70s-era Gibson Ripper pickup in the neck. The body was carved out of two pieces of 40-year-old alder. The neck is from a ’70s Gibson Grabber with a reshaped headstock. Gelber keeps it strung up with D’Aquisto flatwound strings (.050-.105).
Duane Betts was born into rock ’n’ roll royalty, which has some benefits when it comes to gear. Betts’ main touring guitar is his Gibson Les Paul Dickey Betts signature model, which was a gift from his legendary father.

Anyone know what the heck Duane's pedal board is made of? I know it looks like a custom Gelber magnet thing, but wtf is that base its on?
leather straps are so passé dude
1962 Stratocaster ????looks like a 64 or older with the large transition logo
There you go, "the maple neck was the best I've ever played…instead of rosewood'…exactly my experience too
Fun fact: Duane is the son of famous baseball player Mookie Betts.
Wiley (and dad) is such an innovator! I wish him well.
Taylor is the kindest human in the business.
We need a new rundown for these guys!
Duane Betts is an… interesting… conversationalist.
“Let’s get into ampland!” Cringe chills.
A Rig Rundown on the personal set ups of the PG Staffers would be cool, someday!
I've rewatched this episode so many times. I sure hope we get a second Dawes episode someday soon! I'd love to hear Wylie talk about the guitars he's built recently.
Nice hair John!!!
That’s a 66 strat not a 62
Man I feel bad for Duane- when he said "you had to be a guitar player" – you could see Duane die a little inside. Must be hard to live under such a shadow and expectation.
"Thats just an acoustic ." then shows and describes a free very expensive MARTIN ! Duane borrows from dad ? These kids speak a language very few do .
Looking at an old Gibson "And the neck is not broken? Wow."
As an aspiring guitar builder, Wylie is my new hero!
I heard the cool bass guitar guy here is the boyfriend of Clara Balzary..the daughter of Red Hot Chili Peppers' bassist Flea. If that's the case then even cooler. Awesome bassists.
Never heard of these guys but damn he has nice gear!!!
When does fender and martin start giving me stuff??
11:09 tremello? 😀
Came here for Tylor’s rig stayed for Wylies rig
Skinny white dudes. There for the easy pussy for the rest of their lives.
I dont know whos responsable for running these videos but how can they make us watch all this with all that great looking keyboard rig in the back and then just fade out! dang!
Is anyone else worried about Duane Betts ? He seems to have trouble forming a complete thought or finishing a sentence. I was gonna make a very distasteful joke and tell someone to check a make sure he didn’t have a stroke before this interview but…….
Why you touching all the mans guitars? Haven't seen you do that with other guys.
man I didn't used to like John so much but does he ever know his stuff. A nice and cool guy
As much as it physically hurt me to hear the words "just a custom shop" I get that when you've probably held some of the more expensive guitars on the planet that a new custom shop Gibson might as well be a Korean made piece of particleboard.
Taylor’s Strat should either be a ‘64 or ‘65, with that transition logo on the headstock, not a ‘62. Still very cool.
Every time Taylor goes to put up his guitar in the rack and John grabs it, I like to imagine he is super bothered by it.
gold(en)berg
That's not a '62. I'd guess a '65 Strat.
I feel like John interrupts so much!
Wylie Gelber is such a rad dweeb.
