Rig Rundown – Doyle Bramhall II

Article & photos: http://bit.ly/DoyleBramhallIIRR

At age 18, Doyle Bramhall II was recruited by the Fabulous Thunderbirds to hold down the guitar slot. Since that early break he has stuck out as a solo artist, toured with Roger Waters, and spent over a decade collaborating with Eric Clapton. PG caught up with Bramhall II at Nashville’s City Winery while he was touring to promote his new solo album, Rich Man.

Doyle keeps his touring guitars to a minimum, spending the majority of his time on this ’64 Fender Strat. A trademark of his style is that he plays “upside down” with the thinner strings (usually D’Addario .011s) on top.

Bramhall uses a two-amp combo live. The first amp is this Blankenship Variplex that feeds a Fender Bassbreaker BB-12 2×12 cab with Celestion Vintage 30s.

  • Left handed strung, right handed, that’s how I jam and it’s awesome. I’m in great company. I would never change it for anything. ????????

  • For the record: Jimi Hendrix played a right-handed guitar left-handed, with the strings 6-to-1 from top to bottom; Eric Gales plays a right-handed guitar left-handed, with the strings 1-to-6 from top to bottom; Otis Rush played the way Doyle Bramhall II plays…a left-handed guitar left-handed, with the strings 1-to-6 from top to bottom.

  • I’ve watched this a few times, but I didn’t notice the guy from Eyes Wide Shut lurking around in the background pretending to set tables until now. Tone spy.

  • He has earned his place in the top blues players list for the last thirty plus years and I am a huge fan of his work and he has been with Clapton since the first part of the nineties so he has been very creative with his solo stuff and his contribution in the Arc Angels with is a great album/ CD That still stands out today

  • Whatever his vices might be, he's still one hell of a guitarist and that's all I'm interested in. May God help him to overcome any addiction

  • I don’t know why people think Jimi played the guitar strung up side down. I remember someone telling me he made the Wawa sound without the pedal. Kind of suck cause how do you play wind cry’s marry or little wing ? I know Eric Gail probably does.

  • I love the man❤, but it's a self limiting party trick! (I'm a lefty that can play upside down if necessary, like a lot!)x

  • Mr. Bramhall (II???), whom my friends all call Fat-butt, because of his appearance onstage in eric clapton's touring videos, is as particular as anyone else about his gear. However he needs to go to school as far as his guitar playing goes. When EC's bass players come to a full stop during a blues number, you're supposed to hit a hot vibrato note and HOLD it, then, cascade into something tasty, as Albert King (Live at the Filmore) did again and again. When I saw DB II get this opportunity to shine: he choked, and played nothing at all, over and over again! In the eyes of any blues guitarist watching, he flunked his audition, over and over again. When Slowhand let him try to do Duane Allman's slide part during the coda of Layla, he played completely without competence, out-of-tune 90% of the time! When you are a darling of some type of rock star, (or in this case a rock star's drummer), people may not want to tell you that you don't have what it takes to make it. That's why most great musicians (e.g. buddy rich) don't want their offspring going into the same business, or worse, trying to follow in their footsteps. Mr. BH (II???) needs to wake up and smell the coffee: there are a gazillion guitar players who can play circles around him, with extreme taste, panache, and stage presence.

  • If JB is being slagged for having to work with one of the flattest personalities that I’ve seen, people are missing the mark a wee bit. Particularly given that the venue looks like a sit-down buffet.

  • 1964's continue to come up as really great guitars. Have four Strats here '55, 57, 64, 66 and the 64 is heads and tails over all of them. This particular one found at the original owners home right down the block from me. Super clean as he never learned how to play it, not one solder's been touched and it weighs 6,5 POUNDS!!! Have never had a trem Strat that light. AND….yes, it's for sale

  • I saw Doyle in another video where Eric Clapton and several others were playing songs by Robert Johnson.
During the song, Eric said "Doyle," then Doyle took a solo.
I noticed he had his guitar strung upside down.
I had to find out more about this player.
    He's quite remarkable.

  • 7:19 ‘he could get past all that because his arms were so long’
WTF is wrong with this guy ?
Maybe if you tighten your strap a lil you’d have longer arms too

  • I love watching Doyle play with the great Eric Clapton. Arc Angels and Storyville were amazing and I was lucky enough to see them in small and large venues in and around Houston. Traveled to 6th street in Austin a handful of times. My great friend, Mary, was the promoter and manager for many musicians such as Bobby Mac and Seth James Walker all amazing. All great musicians from TX, all very approachable and humble. Doyle is one of my favorites by far and I love his vocals
