We had the good fortune of catching up with California hardcore outfit Drain on their Good Good Tour, a year after the release of their 2023 LP, Living Proof. A few hours before the band ripped Nashville’s Brooklyn Bowl, guitarist Cody Chavez gave PG’s Perry Bean the scoop on how he achieves his brutal rhythm and lead tones that form the basis of the band’s thrashy, metallic hardcore.

  • that fender modeler must be pretty simple to use! he doesn't seem like the kinda guy who likes to fuss over knobs and settings so that's saying alot that he's bought into it.

  • Slapping some chorus in the rythm tone is such a good idea. Makes the sound wider and punchy? Whatever it does it works.

  • I love when players fiddle with their instruments while they’re talking. So cool, the sign of a true artist.

  • see I was gonna buy a Jackson American Series Soloist, but unfortunately I only had X-Series money.
So what I did was just bought the Neck-Through X-Series and put the locking tuners, Gotoh Trem 1996 Trem/Nut, Titanium Green Hardware, and the Seymour Duncan Black Winters. Even put a little Toolkit on the back of the headstock.

    The American-X Series.

  • I’m not much of a hardcore fan, but that was really cool and his attitude is awesome: Just plug that shit in and play it. Tone sounds killer and the Virtuoso is one of my favorite guitars I own too. It’s hard to beat either a JB/59 or an EMG 81/85 set. Both almost always sound ????.

  • Why does that bother you? Tech generation scares me how much they want everyone to think, act, have the same concerns and interests they do…not to mention how much they need to let everyone know what offends them and then damn or get offended by all those that don’t think the same… does the fact that he doesn’t know exactly what pickups are in his guitar make him any less of a player? Some players don’t worry as much about the tech side of things, and some do. Personally, I listen to all sorts of music, and I like the fact that I can listen to different types of players, all with different approaches. Some are more technically advanced, some are just good songwriters. We are in a good age for guitar players. Compared with the 80s and 90s, I feel like there’s more unity in rock and roll and all the sub genres it has spawned than ever before, which is great for the fans. In the early 90s, it seemed like everything was so segregated as far as the artists were concerned. Generally speaking, fans of one type didn’t like fans of another type. Now, you see bands forming with members from different eras and sub genres.???????? Personally, I love it. 17:53

  • Cody's a true guitar player. Even though I'm not a "hard core" genre fan, I love when the players have no clue what model the pickups are. Most important to him, it sounds good…..that separates the real players from the rest. They know what they love and just go with it. Cheers

  • Awesome to see these dudes getting attention and also AWESOME to see the signal chain breakdown. Seems like it's much easier to do with the Tonemaster screen and touch functions.

  • Drain is the most entertaining, fun to see band on the planet right now. The only thing that bums me out is to see them have to use barricades. I'm stoked to see them getting so popular though! I lost a tooth at my first Drain show three years ago and they've been my favorite since.
