Premier Guitar’s Ted Drozdowski met with guru of tone Eric Johnson before his show at Nashville’s City Winery. Johnson revealed his absolute commitment to recreating his trademark sounds with his carefully selected array of guitars, a four-amp setup, and his resurrection of his original Ah Via Musicom pedalboards.

Although he carries two of his new signature Fender Stratocaster Thinline guitars, Johnson mostly plays this vintage-white model. The only mod is the bridge pickup, which he replaced with a DiMarzio HS-2 to better dial in the tones from Ah Via Musicom.

The other axe Johnson relies on heavily is a 1954 Fender Stratocaster. Note the more severe angle of the stock whammy bar. It’s a trait of ’54s that he applies to his signature models. This axe also includes the bridge pickup from the guitar he used on the original recording of “Cliffs of Dover.”

  • It’s amazing how Eric comes to life when the interviewer asks him about his first Strat at 18. He réalisés the dude has done his work!!! ❤

  • The Starbucks coffee cup is Eric's. He goes to Starbucks all the time. Most important piece of gear on the stage, the interviewer failed to ask him about.

  • There's some serious Bob Ross energy being challenged in this interview. I was waiting for a titanium white stratocaster.

  • Opening line – a wonderful guitar player. I nearly choked on my food. The guy is a LEGEND and he's standing next to you.????

  • I love Eric Johnson! For 20+ years I have been stating that he is the best overall guitarist alive. And I just ordered the Fender EJ Thinline Strat this week. Also I love Rig Rundown — even when it features artists I am unfamiliar with — as it has introducted to awesome musicians like Cory Wong and Warren Hayes — both of whom I became fans of through Rig Rundown. So keep up the great work!

  • I thought it was crazy he’s doing his own Rig Rundown instead of having his tech do it but then I noticed it was from five years ago and realized he wasn’t famous yet and probably couldn’t afford a tech because this is pre TikTok. ????
    (That’s a joke, kids. Relax.)

  • Wow, to see the old boards and such, it's a complete bravery test. I went from the Steve Vai rundown which his tech is OCD over perfection, new reliable everything, which is cool. Then you come here and some of those cords looks like they were jacked from some back country phone switchbank from the 50's. I just love it all.

  • Looking pretty good for just short of 70 years old. The guy seems very humble,Super intelligent, has a sense of humor. I’ve never heard him speak negatively about any other player or guitar he doesn’t use.

  • I see from all the pedals having the jacks unplugged that he must be running them on batteries.
Eric is a guy that has one of those voices that when i talk with them it takes everything i have to keep from falling asleep and fight to keep my eyelids from closing. It isn't that "they were so boring i fell asleep," it's literally the sound of their voice.
